A friend of mine is looking at buying a boat (and so am I, but I think I've found mine).

It is a tunnel boat, Bayhawk, with a 90hp Johnson on it. I has a 4 blade prop (not sure of the pitch), and a 'doelfin'.

While we were testing it, I noticed that while at cruising speed, if you try to go faster and top the engine out...it would accelerate and hold the speed for a few seconds, and then it would act like the prop had no load on it and it was free-spinning. I have never experienced cavitation, but I assume that is what this was, am I correct?

Ok, no big deal...cavitation, There is only so much that can be causing it. So, we experiment a little more, and it continues to do it, so we take the boat back to the ramp where the seller is waiting.

As we pull into the sellers driveway, I notice that the seller never removed the 'muffs' from when he ran the boat on the water hose earlier. Therefore, there was an obvious water distraction mounted to a major hydrodynamic area of the engine during the whole 'test ride'.

Could this have caused the boat to act funny due to the water flow being irritated when it went past the 'muffs'? This is inline with part of the prop, and I would THINK it could cause 'cavitation', or something similar.

The water pressure on the boat was good, and it didn't overheat. The muffs slid back and allowed plenty of water into the inlets, thankfully.

I'm just curious if this could be his 'cavitation' problem, or if he needs to worry elsewhere. We would just go 'test' it again, without the muffs, but it is a 2hr drive. The seller said he never had any problems with cavitation, and that the muffs had to be the culprit.

Any feedback?

Thanks!
Shawn

Let me go into a bit more detail on the problem the boat was having.

We'd be running about 4700rpm, and all of the sudden the boat would jump to 5000rpm. It was obviously not an engine related problem, definitely propulsion. Because, the speed would stay the same, or even slow down...if you tried to accelerate more, the problem stayed the same. However, if you got off plane, and got back on, the problem was gone. It almost seemed like there was an air pocket where the prop is.

I was thinking it was a tilt/trim issue, and tried getting it to work right...lowered the engine all the way and the problem was less frequent.

Looking for opinions before the next test ride. I also talked with a guy who has the same boat, same engine, and he said he doesn't have any trouble with cavitation. He does have a different prop though..

Thanks!
Shawn

Ill stick my neck out and say that Im about 95% sure that was your problem! You wouldn,t beleave the turbulance that was causing around the prop! The Prop needs an unobstructed flow!

I was thinking the same thing. I just went and looked at my boat...and the area where the muffs go is causing turbulence on 50% of the prop at least...

I'm suprised the boat got on plane at all!

I'm anxious to see how it does without that...

Glad I'm not the one who made that mistake, I'd feel like a fool!

Thanks, anymore responses are welcome...

Shawn

Ditto on what LubeDude said. Can't be good to run it like that..

When he does run it again, pay close attention to the RPMs at full throttle. He wants closer to 5500 if it's a 90 degree V-4 or 6000 if it's a 60 degree V-4. Otherwise the motor is loaded too much. He might actually get more speed with a lower pitch prop, better hole shot too. Also, try it with and without the whaletail once he finds the right prop. I gotta say that a tunnel hull with a whaletail would look awfully silly! The right prop might eliminate the need for it.

Not to get technical, but that was probably ventilation he was experiencing. Cavitation occurs underwater. Ventilation occurs when surface air gets into the blades. The turbulance from the muffs probably caused ventilation.

WillyBWright,

The engine could've easily spun to 5500+, no problem. However, we didn't want to rev it that high because it was obvious that it wasn't propelling us anymore then it was at about 5k rpm (5k was the edge where it felt like it would 'let go' and just slip).

The owner said it will turn 5500 all day long, no prob, but he usually cruises at 47-4900 (he's older, and doesn't like going really fast, especially over shallow water. (can't blame him for the shallow water part...)

Thanks!
Shawn

hot horn works fine, water temp was cool.

I checked the water temp while it was running (stuck my hand under the stream), and it was cool enough to shower in...lol

The muffs slid back from the water pushing on them, and therfore opened up the holes for the inlet. It was not covering the inlet holes at all.

Anyways, Turn the key on, and the buzzer works. So, I assume the hot horn works...but it definitely wasn't overheating.

Shawn

Tested the boat again, with no muffs, runs great with no cavitation. lol, can't believe they were left on in the first place... ;)

Thanks guys

Shawn

LubeDude,

I actually just bought another boat. This is a boat my friend is looking at, and will probably pass on.

I bought a blue wave, and took my friend out in it and he likes the ride a lot better then in the Bayhawk, so I think he wants to find a boat similar to mine. My boat has an identical engine on it (mine has an 88spl Evinrude vs 90 Johnson), and it's faster, dryer, and smoother...

Take care

Shawn

LMAO. HA HA HA HA HA.
Sorry to laugh so much, but that is hilarious. It took me 5 min to calm down so I could write this. Not laughing at you, just the other guy who left the muffs on.
Hope everything works out for you.
Cheers.... :D

Re: Stupid Accident today while 'testing' a boat...got a ?

what was funny is it was the guy trying to sell the boat, and he couldn't explain why the boat wouldn't stay on plane and had bad ventilation...

I looked down and noticed the muffs once we got it out of the water on the trailer.

good stuff! Needs to go in the 'biggest boat ramp mistakes' threads...

Shawn

If it not the turbulence from the muffs I would place money on a bad prop - the hub is spinning or "slipping" out. It needs a new rubber do-hickey - a local shop charges $28.

It was the muffs causing the trouble, 100%. My friend called me and said he tried it again this weekend without them and it did great. He wasn't impressed with the overall ride of the boat though, so I think he is going to pass...we'll see.

Shawn
