My experience with magnesium is that it burns really hot and purty quick but is not explosive. I've got one of those campfire starter things where you shave some off the block. I'm sure you know lots of facts about it.

I agree that the video is fake but don't think for a second that magnesium can't be explosive. If a sufficient amount of it is burning in a contained environment, it can cause the vessel containing it to explode. I'll leave it to the experts to explain exactly why this happens (I suspect that it is merely a matter of radidly expanding heat/gases) but it does.

From a personal perspective, I will tell you that I darn near got my head blown off when some idiot at the air station where I served, decided that we all needed a demonstration of how hot and dangerous a Mark 45 parachute flare can be. The Chief Survivalman who was giving the demo laid the thing on its side on the tarmac, set the pressure altitude arming device to sea level, and then pulled the firing pin. Instead of ejecting the magnesium flare completely, as it normally would, the device only ejected it partway. Soon thereafter, the whole thing exploded. There were several significant injuries, including one Petty Officer who ended up with a sizeable chunk of aluminum shrapnal in one of his thighs.

He's lucky that wasn't pure magnesium which will ignite at 72F in the presence of Oxygen and burn like hells own fury!! Only seen the stuff in water filled tubes, we did take a tiny piece out one time though (we weren't close to when it ignited though either).

I don't know about magnesium, but as a kid, we used to use a mixture of sulphur, salt petre, and powderized charcoal briquets. We made a cannon out of an 18" section of galvanized water pipe, with a threaded end cap on it and a small hole drilled in it for the fuse of a 2" firecracker we'd use as a primer.

Just fill that pipe up with a few inches of that powder, wad it with tinfoil, and use a 3/8" ball bearing as a projectile.

It was a tad difficult to aim, but that ball bearing would penetrate 12 inches of solid wood, if you could hit the wood!

Since we somehow miraculously managed to survive and not kill anyone or ourselves, it was great fun. Lots of experimentation was required to perfect the technique.

I'm with Bob on this one,having had a similar career with pyrotechnics of the tnt type.Magnesium is far too stable for that effect.
Besides if it would have been real,the curtains would no longer have been on the wall,let alone clean.

Yea, I just looked up. In powder form it is explosive. I guess it makes sense. If shavings burn so well, powder would burn exponentially faster. Learn something new every day.

Cool video, but if they were going to spend the time to do it, he should have kept the same shirt on ... or maybe the explosion blew the design right off the shirt! And it was amazing how the explosion turned the lighs on also! But it was a cool video, all the same!

Yeah, its funny, but fake. Notice how the lights are off when he lights the explosive, and after the bang, the lights are on. Plus there is no power burn marks on the drapes from flying bits of burning magnesium.

Magnesium is used in pyrotechnics mainly for the brightness of the flash. Mixed with the proper chemicals it will burn (pyrotechnics really just deflagrate) and not explode. Additional chemicals and metals are added to "fireworks" for color, brightness and effects.

A "true" high order detonation is a flash of orange light with very little smoke.

A nice attemp at looking stupid..... he did to me.

See the avatar picture ......... 3 lbs of a true high explosive buried 3 feet down with a titanium and gasoline bag (when it was affordable ) on the surface to produce flame and color (which can be colour for some) for a movie shot.

Well, in my younger days. We use to fill a co2 cartiage (like from your bb gun) with black power and magnesium tape a D12 zero delay rocket engin to it and tape that to a 3 foot wooden dowl. Stuff a piece of cannon fuse in the rocket engin. Makes a hell of a bottle rocket.
Another time, we filled a galinized bucket full of magnesium stuck some cannon fuse in a road flare, burried that in the bucket and used a Maraboro as a timer. Waited until 1am, sat it on top of a little mountain and let the smoke. 14 min later. The sun came up!!!!!!! Now that was cool! Except for all the fire trucks and police driving around trying to figure out what happend.
