Does Merc (or a third party) make a replacement drive gear for the oil injector system that's not plastic? (1998 Merc 150 standard)

This engineering design compares to GM's design on the window regulator. (Stupid) There, got that off my chest.

I'm about to put back together my 1998 Merc 150 from a piston failure due to this plastic gear. If there's no better/improved retrofit part that's "metal", then screw the oil injection and I guess I'll premix. Whole thing sucks and Mercury engineers should be "***"hamed.

CDI Electronics / Rapair markets a direct replacement unit that is electric, not gear driven. Uses the stock components except the gear deal. Very nice looking unit.

From what some of my high volume service aquaintances say, it's even dumber than just a stupid plastic gear. There's valving on the delivery side of the pump that plugs easily. When it does, the output shaft locks up assuring continuance of zero oil flow!!

You had more than one piston fail... right?

Re: Stupid Merc plastic drive gear

usually that gear fails due to rust on the driven gear. inspect or post oics of the driven gear for any signs of rust/pitting. I do agree on the plastic part. its sucky butthey still make them that way. should have been machined from brass. but that may have cost the CEO his retirement package. I hope the new chinese built plastic stuff holds up better. usually the rust on the driven gear is from storage over 30 days without fogging. usually about 15 min or so after starting the next trip the oil alarm goes off. if it works.

Reminds me of the Australian Ford Falcons from the mid 90's. They changed the type of rubber on the rear main oil seal to save a few buckazoids and every one failed at 20,000 km requiring removal of the transmission to replace.

How does a oil gear failure take out a piston??
Seems like the operator would shut down and premix when he/she heard the alarm..
then go on with the day ??

trick is, hear the alarm, that you know works cause you check it often, then shut down ..
estimate your fuel left ..add oil from your remote tank to "guess-timate" 50 to 1 ..
disco the alarm wire ..keep on boating.

Call Marine Solutions at 262-524-0804. They have an electronic oil injection system that solves your problem in about an hour.

API Marine in FL stocked them last year. I put one in an d it has been flawless for ~150 hours. Easy install ... just follow the directions, especially the spark plug recommendation.

how do you know when the electronic oil pump quits pumping? When you hear the engine hand grenade?

I keep three or four pints of 2 stroke oil under the seat. If I ever hear that oil alarm, I'll stop, pre-mix and take off.

Re: Stupid Merc plastic drive gear

bamadave, all of the oil inj alarms are retained w/ the electronic oil inj system, including the pump rotation alarm. Should the pump stop rotating for any reason, the oil alarm would immediately sound.

Re: Stupid Merc plastic drive gear

I just disconnected the oil lines, cut the wires to that dang beeper, then started pre mixing and now I dont have to worry anymore. No problems after that. One less thing to worry about.
