Stupid mistake

Hi everyone:

I've got a 1998 Larson with a 5.0 GL (PBYC) Volvo Penta charcoal engine. My shift cable froze up so I ordered a new one to replace it. Here's my stupid mistake, I can't seem to get the cables to line up again. I had to disconnect both the throttle and the shift cable to get the controller out of the boat. I had a problem with it (the controller) also, not letting the engine start after disengaging the shift. I should have taken a picture of it or something but I couldn't even get to it to see it prior to removing it. Anyway, I'm hoping someone could direct me to a picture or diagram of the shift/throttle control connections. The shift and throttle control has OMC stamped on it.

Thanks for any help/suggestions, Steve

Re: Stupid mistake

Make sure you haven't swapped the cables at the control. That'll do it everytime. If it's any consolation, I've done it many times. LOL...

Steve: Thanks for the reply. Do you know where I might find a picture of the set-up/attachments for the OMC control?

Re: Stupid mistake

Since you have an OMC control that you are not sure of, I'm going to move this over to the OMC forum. Someone there may have an answer or drawing.

Thanks. I'm going to take a picture of it today and post it on that forum. I've reattached everything and am ready to try and install it back on the gunwale.

Re: Stupid mistake

I finally found a diagram for a 1998 OMC control and am attaching it to this thread. I have the throttle connected to item #7 and the shift connected to item #9. Is this the correct set-up? Getting the whole control system back in is a royal pain in the butt and I'd rather make sure I've got it right before re-installing everything.

I don't quite have the hang of attaching a picture, the icon lets me insert an URL, which I've done.

Thanks greatly for any advice.

Thanks Don. Do you know where the cables are supposed to be attached?

Re: Stupid mistake

Well, I hooked everything up the way it looks like it's supposed to go and shift and throttle was working (by observation). Then I tried the trim and just got a clicking noise and no movement of the outdrive. I quickly disconnected everything checked for a blown fuse or something (didn't see anything) and tried the trim again, it worked fine.

So, I obviously connected something up wrong. I doubt it would be the cables as they are just mechanical, not electrical. Control 'seems' to be in the right position when I hook it up, the shift lever in the middle, full upright position. I think I inserted a wrong screw in part/item number 16. I never disconnected any wires to the controller while doing all this so I'm somewhat at a loss as to what I've done wrong.

Has anyone else worked on this control before? If so, any advice would be great.

Re: Stupid mistake

Looks like I'm the only one interested in this but in case this helps someone in the future I'll add this post. After disconnecting everything (thorottle and shift cables) I attached the shift arm and moved the control through all motions, shift engaged, shift not engaged, etc. after determining the correct position for neutral and which linkage operated the shift and which the throttle I hooked the throttle and shift cables back up. Getting the whole assembly back on the gunwale was a challenge but after standing on my head for awhile I got it attached, although just barely. It seems the dealer I bought this boat from assembled the control in a strange way (why would someone use an OMC control on a Volvo-Penta Engine/outdrive?) and not the way the exploded diagram above shows. Right now I only have one screw holding the controller to the face plate but I bought some extra screws today and will tighten it up later. Apparently, the problem with the trim was due to a short caused by one of the screws I had originally used being a bit too long. It must have touched something internally and caused a short.

I dry tested everything, and could see that the throttle was working correctly. My wife observed the outdrive after I re-attached the linkage (new cable) to it and saw that it was engaging correctly (although still not 100% sure that forward is forward and reverse is reverse but a water check will determine that).

I was then able to start her up for only the second time after five years in storage. She ran great but after about 2 minutes started spewing water from around the engine water pump. I had anticipated that the pump would go sometime or another so I had ordered a new one and just completed putting that on. That is a whole nother matter!

To, hopefully, end this story I'm going out in a few minutes and try firing her up again. I had a break for dinner and stiff drink. Hope all goes well but I think it is finally back together.

Five years of storage does nothing good for a boat and I still have many, many things to check out before I think she's seaworther again but I'm getting there.

Thanks again to all of you who helped me out on this.

I also want to especially thank Don for the help he provided and getting me to the right forum for this.
