OK. Mock me if you like, but here,s the question. I have a standard VHF radio. What is the proper way to listen to weather? What channels are they? And do serious weather reports automatically get broadcasted on a typical VHF radio, as in do the storm warning report automatically override anything else I'm listening to?

I
ve heard that emergency reports get broadcasted on channel 16 and 9. But what about the continuous weather forecast?

Basically, what is the proper procedure?

Thanx

Look on your radio, and it should have a "weather" button or "wx" button or switch. You just set your radio to that, turn down the squelch, and listen away.

No procedure, doesn't bother anyone else, only you hear it. You should have 11 or 12 different channels (I believe there are only 3 frequencies, that overlap to cover all areas), and you just select the one(s) that pick up the best. They play recorded forecasts, that update typically about every 1/2 hour. During stormy weather, they usually update more frequently.

Thanx sea dawg.

What if I'm listening to another station, can it be set that weather alerts override that?

Capecliff
If your VHF has the ability to "scan", simply program in the channels you like to monitor AND the weather channel that comes in the clearest. Press the "scan" key & off you go. Make sure your squelch is turned down & you will see the channels flashing.

Yea, like CT says, it depends on your brand of radio. You should be able to do both though.
