"She's a good girl"..... who lies about her age to LEO's

Honestly as silly as ticketing a minor sounds (yes they should have ticketed the operator), it may at least save a life. Rosie may like spotting the passing fish while under way, but I bet she wouldn't like spotting the spinning prop coming at her if she fell off the bow.

That does not make a bit of sense. I can see why they would issue a ticket for that kind of violation, but not to the kid doing it. The operator of the boat should have recieved the ticket. What's next? They gonna start ticketing infants for not being in car seats?

Agreed, as long as she is under 16. Apparently she claimed otherwise and the "responsible" "adult" (who was niether very adult nor very responsible) let her get away with it. At 16, you are reponsible for your own actions in a motor vehicle here in Michigan.

Pehaps the confusion about her age had something to do with that. Maybe Mom and Dad thought it was okay to hang over the bow while underway as long as you are 16. Only explenation that comes to mind about the confusion about her age.

Not nearly enough coherent, believeable info in that story coming from either side to form any firm opinion.

Seems like this happens quite a bit recently. Many news stories, both local and on a national level get twisted to some degree. It's like the media is in a hurry to beat their competition to the punch. I think they go to print or on TV before they get their facts straight or get the whole story.

The reporters are in a hurry; the editors don't take time to read and understand; the departments are thinned out so everyone is over-worked and running on "emergency" level at all times; and at the risk of unfairly insulting the good writers, there are a lot of writers out there who can't, largely due to the failure of our schools, but also with the end of book reading, composition writing and strict grading.

I am appalled at the poor writing I see in the major papers and press daily, stuff I knew better than to do in seventh grade.

More disturbing to me, I went to check the comments and under the Add A Comment space it read, "Posting as (bassman284's real name)." How the heck did they get that?

The ticket had her proper birth date on it. She may have originally lied about her age but it was known when the ticket was issued.

Re: stupid parent?

I live in Mi. and received tickets from LEO's when I was that age, and I deserved them too. Nothing wrong with teaching a young person the law, and yes I agree the parent should have better judgement. But everyone has a brain, and everyone can think, including a 16 year old. Last time I checked a 16 year old can drive a car, and I think alone, and that requires a bit of thinking too. I sayu write them tickets, it fills in the gap in parenting skills.

In our newspaper online, you can't post comments to "crime stories" and certain others without registering and giving your real name--just like with a letter to the editor. They found that the comments to those stories were too vicious and judgmental, I guess, and wanted some accountability. You can still sign in and use a "screen name" for comments on politics, local news, etc.

Many newspapers have started using Facebook Comments for their news sections so that your real name shows up. They are trying to cut down on the inflammatory comments that you get when the posters are anonymous and un-moderated.
If you were logged into your Facebook account, your name would show up that way.
