I currently have a michigan wheel prop on my merc motor. My question is, what is the name of the washer that is behind the prop? Do I re-use this washer if I ever decide to switch props(different brand)? Thanks.

Re: stupid prop washer question.

We suspect you're talking about the thrust washer that's actually in front of the prop. The thrust washer goes on the propshaft first, then the prop, then a spacer or washer and then the nut. In most cases the thrust washer is the same as long as the repalcement prop is the same style as the old one.

thanks for the info. so are you saying thrust washers are different with different brands of props? for example: michigan wheel thrust washers will not work with a mercury prop? would i have to get a mercury thrust washer for a mercury prop?

Re: stupid prop washer question.

90% of the time the thrust washers will interchange as long as you're going with the same style prop. Not knowing which Merc you have makes it hard to be specific but lets assume you have a V6 and you're running a large hub 3 blade. If you go to another large hub 3 blade prop, there's a 99% chance the same thrust washer will work.

If youre running a large hub 3 blade and want to go to a small hub 4 blade, theres a good chance it will still work but maybe not.

If you're running a large hub 3 blade and go to a chopper style prop, there's a good chance the existing thrust washer won't work.
