There is no room under the flywheel for a battery charging coil !!------Bracket for the starter motor is there I believe.------Is there a ring gear on the flywheel, yes or no.-----What is your $ limit to get electric start ?----Your location ?----Does the motor run like new to warrant the spending ?

fastest and lowest cost way to add electric start and charging to your existing 55 year old motor

sell what you got
buy what you need.

Agreed. Adding a starter motor to that motor requires major, surgery. I've had a couple and hang figure out how to get a starter motor in there without removing the whole power head. They fixed that in later models with a two piece mounting bracket, but the early ones were a pain.

Well the thing is I am trying to bring this back to life and glory Yes there is a Lark IV 40 hp on it but the lower cylinder needs a rebore. So I have a new used back up motor that works BUT I am not too sure about the workings of its system is all. I am a fairly handy person and qualified by the government to turn wrenches and have handled tougher jobs. I am asking for a reason as I want this boat to be as much of the year (1963) it was made than not . I am waiting for the manual to arrive as I have ordered one today. So Im merely asking the questions so I can start to prioritize the labour. My parents had this model when I was a kid and now wish to show my mom that I havent forgot it. when this model was brought out it set a speed record (with a 80 hp). I have had it out before the Lark gave up and I do like the way it drives and loads Now to find some schematics of it Thanks yall

Hang in there Jim. We brought this 1960 Starflite back to life. :) The 300 Merc on it does have electric start, but no charging system. Parts for the magneto are hard to find now days. BTW that's not me in photo, however he does fill the boat.

But those magnetos were " well built " and very durable / easy to maintain.

Is the 35 a long or short shaft motor.-----Post a picture from the side to show where the cavitation plate is relative to the bottom of the boat.----To me it looks short.

Could it be that the previous owner had the lower unit off to replace the water pump/impeller? If so, the shift shaft may have been reinstalled in the wrong position. Don't ask why I suggest this.

YEA I was just pondering that possibility, ... Well It doesnt appear to be moving that much water out the weep hole either, so the lower unit will be coming off. Once i have an impeller kit in hand. at least it wont take too long to repair one way or the other . Way easier than the teardown and rebuild of the 40 HP LARK IV which needs a rebore rings piston. etc... that isnt a day job. I can do that one over winter. this one should be a day to do. Thanks All .. STARFLITE thats a nice looking boat. BTW

LU is off and ill have to do some more exploratory digging but looks like the unit was put together wrong a LONG time ago as the bolt that holds the trim tab took some major farting around to loosen and remove. it was rust eaten and very corroded. But now to figure out how to ensure its in what gear when I go to reassemble.. off to the FAQs and youtube.
