Yes they used carbon steel driveshafts.-----Your Evinrude used stainless.----And you need to think before you go plugging holes in lower units.-----They might be there from day one for a reason !!
Not this one though. nothing where this one is located. It looks like it was left on its side or something vibrated against it I will have to rebuild the Lower Unit though as I wont trust what it looks like in there till I see it myself .
Is that hole on the forward side, just above the gear case? Sort of within the vertical plane of the shift shaft? If so, it's a drain for any water getting into shift shaft area.
Yes, it's under water, but keeps water below upper shifter area.
Curiouser and curiouser as they said in the Alice in wonderland .. Ok it stays just kind of odd. so just have to wait for my impeller pump to arrive then bolt it together .. And sometimes its better to ask a question than not and just make a huge mess. Going to be going to an OSI camp for 2 weeks. By then my parts will be in then i can start to rebuild it. have it together then hit the fall fishing season .
Well now I see that this was put together wrong MANY years ago, judging by the corrosion on the Bolt that holds the trim tab. Also missing was the oil seal part number 32 on the page below. .. Arg, if I would of seen it I would of ordered one, but it was missing . This is showing why I wan't getting the amount of water movement through the motor that I was supposed to . Ahh well at the rate I am going I should have it together complete Just in time for freezeover..
So here you can see the holes location. I can see the ones i think you guys normally see (A) and the other one (B) that is a hole not intended . Any help with the better pic?
