Stupid question

I just purchased a 2008 Crestliner Sport angler 1650 with a 90hp four stroke Mercury. It does not have the fin in the water to calculate speed like my old boat, so how does the speedometer work?

there's a water pick up tube in the lower unit of the motor that's hooked to the speedometer.
