Stupid starting question

Evinrude 155, question about priming the fuel.<br />Been a while since I've owned an outboard<br />Prime everytime? <br />Bulb should be firm correct?<br />Any best guess that if I have to pump and pump 6-10times this is to much and perhaps i have a leak?

Although the motor will probably start right up if it hasn't been too long since you last started it, I recommend priming every time. Think of it as part of your checklist of things that are always done rather than a decision to make each time. It doesn't sound like you're pumping the bulb too much. Actually, I've found that frequently the fuel gets pumped even if the bulb isn't really firm.

anita A motor of that size should have a primer built right into the key start. The bulb should remain hard from the last time you use the boat. Unless you use the boat once a year. If the bulb is neededing 6 pumps to get hard each time there has to be a leak somwheres . <br />Either the fuel line, tank, or engine.<br />steve

to check for leak, press the primer bulb until firm. keep pressing; if primer bulb softens up, then there is a leak somewhere.

Hi Anita;<br />Are you talking about squeezing the primer bulb on the fuel line, or pushing the key in? If it's the primer bulb that you are talking about follow the above information, but if it's the key that you are pushing in, that's different. You should push the key in and hold it in while cranking until the engine fires, not pump it.

Go Back and Read her Question Again...and then answer it....pretty clear case.<br /><br />Prime the bulb everytime until firm. Choke or hold the primer on the motor until it starts.<br /><br />If the motor bogs or runs rough, keep half choke, or bump the primer until it smooths out.<br /><br />PCG
