I have a 1982 Venture bass boat. I bought it about two years ago and knew it was a fixer up boat. I saved enough money and finally got a trolling motor. As I was mounting the trolling motor this afternoon I accidentally drilled through the hull. OOPS!!! The hole was made by a 1/4 inch bit. It is very close to the bow and the hole is above the water line. I was thinking of filling the hole with silicone, and hopefully that would fix it. Does anyone have any other suggestions, or better ideas for repair? Thanks in advance.

JB weld will work better and be more permanant and eaiser to work than polyester

Marine Tex epoxy will work too. It is available in white which is a plus. I used it to fill in the holes in the hull left from old boat cover snaps. I used a 1/2 inch drill bit to chamfer the edge a little so there was more gripping area and filled with epoxy. Marine Tex takes a while to set, so don't be surprised if it is still sticky 8 hours later.

All of the above are good ideas but you can make your own patch to. If you have any 2 part epoxy you can add some Cab-o-sil filler and patch it up then you will need to gelcoat or paint to match or the patch will become yellow due to U.V. light.
Best to camfer the edges to get a better bite.
For begger goofs you can use fiberglass cloth on the inside and glass fibers on the mix for strength. Just in case you have another accident. :D

Thanks for all of the ideas. I assume when you say camfer you mean rough up the edges some? Thanks again!

I mean I used the 1/2 drill on a smaller 1/8 or 1/4" hole to make it cone shaped. That way there is more exposed edge for the epoxy to grip to. The bit is used to just cut in a little amount. Not go all they way through, because then you have a 1/2 hole to fill.
