Hi there everybody, I have a Merc 500 made in Belgium in 1981. Recently, due to my lack of care the engine was submerged for a couple of days (40 or so hours) in brackish water. Now, I have cleaned the engine as soon as I got it out of water, rinsed it with diesel fuel completely, dried the electric components, drained the carbs and cleaned/tuned them. The engine starts (manually) at once, idles somewhat rough, but works, in neutral it would readily accept throttle, up to full, but under load, in forward gear it developes maybe one third of revs, and no more. When I push the throttle further, it seemes to choke. Tried drying the electrical components, changed the high voltage wiring, but nothing happens. Please if somebody knows what else could I search, let me know, thanks in advance, Niksa

I will, thank You. I wonder if the reeds are stuck, maybe by something that entered the engine with water?I got new electrical components, and will fit them this afternoon to see/eliminate the electrics from the problem.

galvic, At this point you have either already damaged the motor beyond repair, by running it after being submerged in brackish water, or the salt content was low enough not to damage it. Good luck, and let us know how you make out.

There is a good chance the lowered RPMs are the result of an electrical issue such as the stator. Check the ohm readings with a DVA against the specifications in your manual.

Good Luck!

Thanks everyone. Studlymandingo, i wonder if You meant the stator of dynamo, under the flywheel, because it is not connected with electricak spark circuit, but gives the juice directly to the rectifier, and to the battery. Nevertheless, I interchanged all electrical components with the other 500 that i have: high voltatge coil, switchbox, magneto, and the wiring, both low and high voltage, and still nothing has changed, so it has to be somewhere else, fuel lines, carbs, reeds, or the pistons. Anyway, thank You folks for helping me,
