I have a Yamaha 115 and my boat and motor were under water for about 1/2 hour.Alarge wave cameover the back and the back of the boat and the motor went under water . I was able to get the boat out of the water and home . I pulled the plugs and cranked the motor over for several minutes to try and get rid of most of the water(freshwater) . I drained the carbs . I pored 2 cycle oil in the plug holes and cranked the motor over several times then waited a few minutes then did it again , about 6 or 8 times . I squrited 2 cycle oil into the carbs and started the motor , it smoked like crazy but ran . I pulled the plugs and squirted 2 cycle oil into the plug holes again and then squirted 2 cycle oil into the carbs and started it again and ran it for several minutes . I waited for a while and started it again and ran it for several minutes again . Motor seems to run OK but do I need to do anything else ? P.S. I'm new to boating and bought this boat equiped the way it is but I don't think the back of the boat and the motor should have went under water . I have a 1986 15ft fiberglass boat and it has a Yamaha 115 on it . I wonder if this motor is too big for the boat . I wonder if it should have , like a 80 hp motor or something on it ? Does this 115 weigh too much ? Any thoughts appriciated .

Re: Submerged Engine

you did all the right things for inside the engine. now you needto take care of the visible external side. undo each wire connection and spray wd40 on it, then a little vaseline over any exposed cables. give the engines housing a good wash with freshwater and you are ready to run :)

115 hp on a 15 boat sound too big for me. it depends on what you want to do. if you are towing heavy weights slowly with a small pitched prop you may be ok. how many people on the boat usually, maximum? what speeds do you want? 115 hp on a 15 boat can be even dangerous: you may be going very fast yet may not have much stability. for upto 20 knots i would choose a 40 hp for 2 on a Boston Whaler type of 15´ boat.

You mention a large wave, large waves will sink just about anyhting so it is relative.

Re: Submerged Engine

Thanks for your advise . I did take care of the outside of the motor too .I wondered about the motor being too heavy because I have seen Ranger advertisements that show the boat cut in half and it still floats upright . I have a glasstream bass boat and just figured it would float upright too , no matter if it filled with water or not . The back of my boat went down under water but the front was still floating . It is a bass boat and it usually has only 2 people in it . This Yamaha 115 seems big for this boat and I'm thinking of going with a smaller Yamaha that weighs less .

IT would seem that you have to be well over the HP rating for that boat. Even though I have personally over horse powered boats, it is not normally a good idea. Obviously, the weight of the engine is too much to safely operate the boat.

I have a 17 ft 'fast fisher' type bot which is basically a speed boat with a cabin, this has an evinrude 50hp which pushes it at around 32 Knotts max, the guy who owned it prior to me had to extend the back board (not transom) as he nearly sank it with the wake that follows the boat, this is not uncommon if you back the throttle off too quickly the wake following can swamp the boat. I would be looking to get rid of the 115 and get something better matched to the boat - speed is nothing without control. Id try a 40 - 70 Hp max depending on what your using it for.
