I'm rebuilding my carb again because I can't find any another reason for why my '91 40 hp Johnson won't idle. I want to do that rebuild as close to by-the-book as I possibly can.

Is fingernail polish a substitute for gasoila? The OMC manual says to use gasoila to seal the core plugs after installing new ones. The local OMC dealer does not stock it and the parts guys suggested using nail polish.

Is Loctite blue a substitute for for OMC Ultralock. The OMC manual recommends this to seal a leak, if any, between the pickup tube and carb body. Again the OMC dealer doesn't stock it and the parts guy said Loctite blue is a substitute.

I just want to be sure. Thanks.

Re: Substitute for gasolia

I was never able to find gasoila either. I needed some last year but can't for the life of me remember what it was for. I really don't like the idea of using fingernail polish in place of gasoila. I asked my daughter to loan me some bottles of her polish so I could check the ingredients and they seem to vary quite a bit. Plus some actually have metallic flakes in them for coloring such as bronze and brass. Potential disimilar metals problem? Perhaps clear nail polish is more consistant?

Anyway, using nail polish bothers me a little. Will anything else work? In the case of Nabeel's project with the core plugs, wouldn't loctite work as well if not better?

You can use Gasket Shellac, but I haven't seen that for years. I expect regular Shellac should work. I had to get some for coating a cork float I made for an old Johnson. I could only find it in Quarts. But it makes great sanding sealer for your woodworking projects. Or you can use it up on most anything you'd varnish.

For years we've used red rtv silicone over the core plug, after seating it.(not for internal carb coreplugs)
Reasoning is you are trying to keep air from getting in,not fuel from getting out.Gas and rtv don't mix well.Unless you want a mess.

DHP

I've been using gasket sealing compound. Put the core plug in and give the top a good coat. Seems to work for me.

Personally, I wouldn't use fingernail polish. It might work well, but, who really knows if can stand up to fuel. Also, it may become brittle and crack over time. I think OMC gasket sealer, shellac gasket sealers or Sealer 1000 would all work well, as they stand up to fuel and are relatively flexible after curing. Personally, I usually use good old Permatex Indian Head shellac sealer. Most autoparts stores that carry the Permatex line will have it. It's cheap and it works.

Liquid neoprene is also a good substitute and it can be found in the electrical section of most hardware stores. Like DHPMARINE says you are making the outside surface of the carb, at the core plug, air-tight. You get the idea. Good luck.

Re: Substitute for gasolia

McGR, I used the Permatex Indian Head shellac sealer and it worked great! Funny how one of their oldest products can still work well for certain jobs. Thanks for the advice.

Can someone elaborate on what Sealer 1000 is?

I've been looking for articles or technical papers on silicone and other sealer compatibility with marine aluminum alloys. Haven't been able to find much. I figure SOMEBODY must have written an article or published a paper on this. Maybe a boating magazine article?

Sealer 1000 is 3M rubber and gasket adhesive #847.

It is also sold under the Boat Armour lable as sealer 1000, formerly sold by Marpox.
