I am going thur a checklist to determine why i intermittently loose power. i was told I may be sucking air. I have eliminated the chance that it is in fuel line from the tanks. How do i check for a leak in engine & carb area? I was going to run engine until gas is gone then blow air in and listen for air leaking. Would a bad stator give intermittent power?

Howdy Crabahalic.

If you are sucking air it would most likely be at a fuel line connector.

Other common causes of intermittent power loss are water in the fuel, debris in a carb bowl, filter bowl or fuel tank and a failing fuel pump.

Yes, problems in the ignition system can do the same thing.

If you can give us more detail about your symptoms we can probably narrow it down some for you.

Exactly when does power drop, for how long, how often and how much?

Let us know what you find. :)

when i first go to take off it will sputter & not come off plane. makes a fluctuating high pitch low pitch noise. i do not have a tach so i can not give u numbers. it will do this for a minute or so sometimes longer. sometimes i back off and try to shift back into gear. anyway it will all of a sudden go like hell and take off. seems to be fuel starved and then finally gets gas. then i can go full blast and then have period of intermittent power loss. i hooked up a portable tank with new gas and oil and still got the same results. that is how i eliminated bad fuel. If it is an air leak it must be within the area within the engine area. this has been going on for over a yr i had thermostats replaced thinking it was running cold, replaced a power pack, had carborators rebuilt. I will have a compression tester to test the cylnders this week. i kept think it was fuel but this has happend over many tanks of gas and i have a water seperator. they sems to seem melting of somthing underfly wheel. Would a stator just go bad or could it intermittenly fail.

Hi crabahalic....

The goo coming from under the flywheel is most likely the material used to coat the stator assembly. It is very possible your power coil is overheating enough to do this and causing undervotages to be delivered to the power packs. May be your problem. You would be wise to replace the assembly before it goes out altogether and takes the power packs with it. The stator combines the alternator and power coils all in one assembly. Good Luck.
