Re: Suggestions for new posters

A couple of days ago Admin5 added the link above the list of topics:
Attention All Engines and Motors Posters: Please post as much info about your engine as possible when you post questions, i.e. manufacturer, make, model number, horsepower, year, etc. Our forum members/experts need this info to help you. Please also read Suggestions for new posters

I guess there is no need to bump it anymore. It is a great idea (this topic and the instructions). Thanks JB and Admin5!

But since some of our regular posters didn't see it probably some of our new members won't either. There is someting about men and reading the instructions first.

Yes I know. My spelling and writing in english isn't really that good. But I learn from you guys. Probably not the best place to learn. :D

We'll see if we still need to bump this one to the top now and then.

Thank you!

/Bear

Re: Suggestions for new posters

We got up to 244 messages in here, mostly bumps back to the top, so I decided to prune those that were not necessary. Please try to follow the advice given and we will all learn a thing or two about boats and motors.

Well, Matttt.

Ordinarily I would delete your post because of your insult. Name calling is bad for open communication.

But, well, if all we "crusty old farts" weren't here you new boaters might have a hard time getting your questions answered.

Now. Just what are the "supposed rules" that you object to? :)

Re: Suggestions for new posters

Give them a break? a break from what? some common manners? supplying all relevant info required to solve a problem? showing some courtesy by acknowledging a response? not doing at least a basic search before posing the same question again? not shouting?
These are not rules per say but just guidelines to make everyones experience a good one. Most of them, decent folk live by anyhow.

I personally think they are great and contribute to making this a successful board. :)

Re: Suggestions for new posters

Here is my suggestion... when someone makes an ASSumption about age and crustyness, the experts should answer that person's questions wrong. For instance, "start off by pouring sugar into your gas to help crystallize the carbon deposits" Or better, just ignore them and not give them the attention they are screaming for. I will gladly play by the rules, since I can get expert advice and not have to pay the $70/hr or more to get it. :p I am surprised noone has told you to keep your DAMaging comments to yourself.

sensors..........what sensors???? ;) ..... sorry JB and ADMIN

Re: Suggestions for new posters

Did a little housekeeping here. Deleted a few posts that had nothing to do with the topic.

These are not "RULES", guys. They are suggestions.

If you follow their advice you will get better help, quicker.

There are a few rules, though.

No "engine or boat for sale" posts.
No person, product, nation or company bashing.
No personal insults or name calling.
No commercial (SPAM) posts EXCEPT by iboats staff.
This is a site for all ages and genders. No off-color handles or comments.
Thou shalt not troll.

Violations of these few rules are very rare, and then almost always by a newcomer who doesn't understand the culture of our site.

Now ask away, and please let us know the outcome of the advice you get. :)

JB (and others)
I'm new to forums in general but not to boating. If you can't be boating this is the next best thing. Great suggestions and I was wondering just how to do a search. Now I know!

Keep up the great work people!
Link
------------------------------------------------
<If you can't be boating... be here!>

Re: Suggestions for new posters

hey guys and gals im new to this but i have had the unfortunate thorn in my side in other forums from those people who have no computer ediquette. The fact that you guys regularly monitor and control this forum is great, it make finding the info you are looking for so much easier when you actually are dealing with mature knowledgable people. thanks

Our forefathers earned that nickname for us, and we carry it on with pride. Kick that ass, take that name, and bring one home for mom.

You wanna live forever?

unknown marine

semper fi

Let me start by thanking all of you for your help with my engine.I think thtat this fourm is great. I have no problem doing a search to find answer. I am new to this place and already I have found enough info to fix several problems. That matt guy should maybe keep his namecalling to himself. Thanks for all your help. SOrry for my terrible typing. I actually speak much better than I type.

Re: Suggestions for new posters

just a thought to ponder...if, as someone suggested, 99.9% of all questions have already been asked then there wouldnt be but maybe a couple replies a year to questions on here. eventually someone would ask that other .1% question & there would never be a new post again.I too have been guilty of posting questions I could have found with a search. most of the time it isnt(in my case) because I didnt take the time to search. alot of times when I see a similar situation with a different brand, size , generation, etc... outboard its hard to know if the solution given will benefit you or hinder your chances of a solution.Im guessing alot of the posts in question are from guys like me who have very limited knowledge of outbords.alot of times I will have to get a shop to do the work anyway but I wouldnt until I asked here first.if shops around you guys are like they are here you know they will take you for a ride if you dont know better.thanks to everyone that takes the time to help people on this board...you play a major role in educating people and policing the "dirty" mechanics
sorry for rambling ;)

Re: Suggestions for new posters

Hello JB and others. I really appreciate your comments and helpful hints. ;) This is our (me and wife) first time on this forum, and as always she's trying to help me fine experienced people with helpful advice and information online to share to steer us int the right direction to solve our problem. We really want to thank all who posted good suggestions and advice. As for the 'rules', keep 'em coming, cause that's the only way us 'New' members learn, and that's from all who have been logging on here for weeks, months, even years.

So far, my wife has really gotten a kick outta reading many of your notes and all. In fact, she thought it was the best forum that she's read since she's been online, so we're hoping to be one of the regular's. If not to ask questions due to a problem we're having, maybe just to stop by and put our 2 cents in from time to time on a topic we know about.

I'm glad to hear there is a 'search'tool, and in response to 'screenbuzz' suggestion about the search tool, we tried looking for a similar problem, but there are just tons  of questions and answers, that it was overwhelming. We'll try our darnest to do better next time before asking, we just have to learn how to use the search. Reading all questions and answers is a great suggestion. Guess we got a little impatient when we couldn't find a similar problem to ours. Thanks again, and everyone have a great evening. ;)
