I have a new 09 Bennington and am looking to purchase a trailer. Figured I'd start here asking your thoughts on best trailers, pros and cons.

i prefer bunk trailer, with an extra long tongue, as toons have to get deeper at the ramp.

Re: Suggestions on Trialers

The type of pontoon trailer you need is based on how far you tend to tow, how often you tow it, and how deep the ramps are. If tow long distances, then a bunk style is best because of the wider wheelbase. A bunk trailer needs a little deeper water to launch however. a sissor trailer is great for shallow water and it also allows you to unload the boat on dry land if you wish. The down side is the narrow wheel base so stability at towing speeds can be an issue and heaven forbid you have a flat tire. I have a bunk style as I keep the pontoon at home. I could get by with a sissor trailer for the local lakes but we often make 500 mile round trips to our favorite fishing holes in northern Wisconsin and Minnesota so I opted for a bunk trailer and find it to be best for me.

Ok, Bunk sounds like the way to go for me, what are some of the better brands or models. Is there a big difference in them and cost? I am quessing based on prev. trailer exper. that duel ax is the way to go. Anything else I need to look for, and what is a fair price for new or used? Thanks for you input. C

I have an 18 foot four-corner fish and it rides on a single axle bunk style (Shorelander). I opted for 20.5x10x8 tires which some would think are too small for the load but these are load range "E" tires and carry 90 PSI air pressure. In retrospect I wish I would have gone with a tandem. There is nothing wrong with this setup but I am getting within 500# of the load limit for this rig. I do like the wide tires as they tend to sink in less on unimproved ramps. Shorelander and EZ-Loader are well known brands.

I have a Wesco trailer and love it. It is a bunk tandem galvenized trailer w/surge brakes.

Any toon over 18' I would consider tandem axles a must. Anything 20' and over brakes a must. Bunks are the bees knees because they support the toons spreading the load the length of the tube, and the plastic "glide on" bunk covers are great.

The small diamter tires on most toon trailers spin faster on the road because of their small diameter. For this reason they require heavey duty bearings. Now, if you just pull the boat a couple of miles, and never exceed 35mph, you can get by with the cheaper axles (with small hubs and light duty bearings) but it just isn't worth the money saved if you ever have to tow the boat further or at higher speeds and have a bearing melt-down.

As far as brands, MagicTilt is everywhere, and competitive in all respects.
