suggestions?

I recently put up a post requesting a website for used mercury control boxes. I was contacted by a member who offered one for sale. After exchanging emails and addresses we agreed on a price and I sent a postal money order to the address given. The day it was sent, I was asked to change the last name on the M/O. It was too late, it was sent.2 days later I receive email that it hadn't arrived. By the third day, when I believe it should have arrived, I emailed (replying to previous sent email)inquiring whether it was received. My email was returned."Mailbox not found". I tried to find listing via directory assistance but no such name is listed. Now I ask you, granted mistakes were made on my part, I shouldn't have been so trusting, but what should I do now? Go there, 2 hour drive? Keep posting, hoping it's all a mistake and I will be contacted by the member of this forum? Please let me know what you guys think my next step should be.

Re: suggestions?

Kend..... For the future, regardless of what you send through the mail, always send it "Signature Required". This will allow you to check on the Internet to see exactly when the item was delivered and exactly who signed for it.

Re: suggestions?

Well way, that first suggestion is always an option. I'm just not sure if after driving 2 hours and finding myself in front of an abandoned house in the middle of crackville usa I'd still JUST want to "kick his a**" that is IF I found him.and by the way, it was $100 +$15 shipping. After being raised in the Bronx, moving to the suburbs,it took YEARS to trust people again.BTW the red flag did go up BUT the M/O was already sent.

Re: suggestions?

Joe, that's good advice but I wonder how much more info that will give me other than when he cashes the money order. True I'd know when he signed for it but I'd also find out "who and when" when he cashes it.If he uses bogus id to cash,he'd use same bogus id to sign and accept letter,no?

Howdy, Kend.<br /><br />Please Email everything you know about this member and the details of your failed transaction to iboats via the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page.<br /><br />I doubt that your bux can be recovered, but we may be able to protect other members from similar problems in the future.<br /><br />Sorry about this. It might be just some confusion that can be fixed. At least I hope so.

Re: suggestions?

And he joined the forum Nov 24th, 2002, took him 2 weeks to make $100. He's a truck driver too guys, he could just be on a mission? Didn't see a boat name under his profile either so I can't make that suggestion. ;)

Re: suggestions?

JB,I've sent all info I have. The emails that were sent are availible if you need them.<br /><br />Rick, I keep hoping it's all a mistake that maybe his aol membership is terminated. But the coincidence is too much for me and the request of a name change..well that sort of dims my hope. What burns me is it was supposed to be a christmas present from my mom to me.What do you want for Christmas? Well..I really need this shifter for my boat..I can get one for a reasonable price from this guy..oh well. You can't make this stuff up! Either way I'm gonna feel like a fool. Anyway, I'm keeping my chin up figuring with all the free advice I got and will hopefully continue to get on here I'm way ahead of the game.

Re: suggestions?

Now I feel real bad for ya there guy. That mom/xmas story touched my heart. Wish I could help you out but I've got a needy wish list of boat parts myself, just to get running again, and I ain't got no mom. Something tells me this could be one of those long threads. Maybe someone out there has something lying around and would like to help out an unfortunate victim of xmas con men.<br /><br />Ho ho ho

Re: suggestions?

In the interest of protecting others, is it possible for our "friend" to return using a new identity? Man... soon as you have a good thing, some baitbucket comes along..I'm curious as to the info the administrators have in able to identify a member by the individual's comoputer "fingerprints". It would bring me great joy to know he just screwed himself out of the joy of membership of our forum. Being beat : 115 dollars. Knowing he'll lose free expert advice:pRICELESS.

Re: suggestions?

Hang in there Ken, it will work out for the best. Maybe he is just on the road. But he should have at least let you know what's going on. Now if you have an OMC product,I would have just what you need hanging in the garage. Maybe someone else on here(Who's been here a while) has what you need and is feeling generous enough to let it go cheap. Good Luck and let us know what happens,

Re: suggestions?

Luna, I don't need a new shifter. I just wanted one. I wanted to change from side mounted back to original top mounted. I am not in need so anyone who wishes to donate please help someone who truly is in need. I'm just not fortunate enough to buy new anything I want and certainly not fortunate enough to let allow my money to be ripped off. I only mentioned the fact it was a gift was to explain how much this situation really sucks. My mom is no old poor lady who will be heartbroken,no...she will say to me , sucker! and I hate when she says that! lol :D

Re: suggestions?

Hey Rick, your a real nice guy and I appreciate your help. See my post above. i don't want anything from anyone. I just want what I paid for.Don't get me wrong, you guys are the best but what I need from all you guys, you already give. I just need advice on keeping my motor and boat alive! and occasionally advice on what to do if I get ripped off!

Re: suggestions?

If there is a moral to this story the only one I can think of is "don't transact with anyone on this or any other forum that hasn't been around for a while."<br /> As JB mentioned ,maybe this situation is just some weird mix-up or coincedence.

Re: suggestions?

I put in a complaint with the postmaster general. Wasn't sure if I should but am told in law enforcement that time is of the essence in this circumstances.Post office will not even know if it's cashed until 60 days.Motor is a 1980 mercury 200. I didn't receive it yet. I need to sell the '00 mercury 125hp that's on there now since it's not powerful enough to push '78 Grady 20'.But I figure I'll give up the side mount shifter with 125hp so as to keep the "package" together and at the same time this top mounted shifter will at least be somewhat original to motor,boat.'78 boat-'80 motor..you know, like a classic or collector series..whatever.I'm just real sorry I didn't know this site when I bought my boat.I found out about a lot of things on here.and I used to think I had experience since this is now my third boat.and for others, 75-80% hp of boat's max hp rating. Even if motor is in new condition, you won't be happy.
