FINALLY getting some summerlike weather here in Michigan. last Sunday, sun and 90 degrees was forecast, so I took the family out on the boat in the afternoon.

After cruising around, I anchored off shore in a spot where boats congregate off the beach. As my kids are playing in the water, not a care in the world, I'm carefully watching ugly purple clouds that suddenly appear on the horizon. I'm hoping the storm passes to the north, but suddenly BOOM! crack of thunder and the rain starts heavy. I yell "out of the water!" and my wife and kids run for shelter. A strong wind kicks up and my boat starts getting blown sideways into shore, almost hitting a pontoon, even though I double-anchored it. I wrestle it back into place. Five minutes later it passes and it's sunny again, like it never happened.

Another squall passed over an hour later, not as bad as the first. Then, driving the boat home we got hit with a major downpour. We get home and it's sunny and raining at the same time. and hotter than ever.

All in all, a typical Michigan summer afternoon. :)

Re: Summer storm on the water!

I was camping in Voyagers National Park last summer. The only access to the camping is by boat. It was rainy and a little windy when we went in, but we went anyway, made camp and hunkered down for the night. The next day was pretty nice till afternoon, then a front came through and the wind picked up to 40 mph or so and stayed there for 20 hours.

The boat was tied, cross tied, and anchored to a dock behind a rocky point, so it did fairly well. The wind literally shattered the bow poles in the tents up on top of the hill.

Settled down to a mere 4' rugged waves about three the next afternoon, so we went fishing. Found some sheltered water, scored some bass for supper, the wind went down, and we got back to enjoying the immense beauty of the place.

On a positive note. The kids that were worried about dad's ability to run the high performance boat are no longer worried.
