Looking for expert advice on Pontoon Boats, we are looking at a new Sun Tracker 20ft Party Barge, vs a Weeres Cadet Cruise 20ft.... I like both, what I really like about Weeres boat is that it is flooring and not carpet....I also like that it has a pop up tent, for bathroom.... Weeres is only 8 ft in width, Sun T is 8.6, trunks on Weeres is 23 on Sun T 24, I like the Mercury 60-4stroke big foot on Sun T, not sure about Tohatsu TLDI 50 on Weeres. Which is a better pontoon boat, which is a better boat motor? From Ontario Canada, will be spending time on St Lawrence River, is this enough motor? Would appreciate any and all feedback, never owned a boat:rolleyes::rolleyes: THANK YOU

You want the larger toons ( trunks ) for a better ride and higher in the water. Always get the biggest engine that you can afford. Obviously the wider the boat the more stable it will be.
I would go with the Sun Tracker.

You can expect about 24 to 27 mph with the 60hp.

The Mercury motor is made by Tohatsu, so they are basically the same motor. I think you could expect to reach speeds of 19-21 mph with either of those set-ups. I have a 90 on a 20 footer and I can hit 26 mph.

Both manufacturers make a nice barge. It's nice to have dealer support close to home if you need them. The general concensus around here is to get the largest motor you can afford. The Merc 60 w/ Big foot lower unit is a well proven combo on barges. Not sure about the Tohatsu lower unit. Good luck !!!

Not so. Merc is made by mercury. Tohatsu is Japanese, used to be Nissan.

That's what the mechanic thought who rigged my motor. The mercury plug didn't mate in the motor, the tohatsu plug did.

lakegeorge, ya! everyone tells me that about engine....do you think there is a big difference between 23 and 24 (trunks)? what about width 8 feet vs 8.6 feet??
