Last year we noticed there was gas weeping through a minute crack between the bilge and the fuel tank compartment. There were no problems with any leaks on hoses or pumps in the engine bay. The only way to get to the fuel tank was the cut a hole in the deck. As it was the end of the season, we just pumped all the fuel out and let the boat sit until recently.
We cut the hole in the deck and pulled out the tank. The hose connections looked good. No hoses appeared to be leaking, no cracks or weak areas or anything. The hoses were smooth and healthy looking. We did a pressure test on the tank, and that went well. The tank looked good, no weak looking areas, no cracks. We even filled the tank with gas just to see if any would leak out. But its holding gas with no leaking at all.
The gasket around the sending unit looks to be good. In fact, it doesn't look like it was leaking around either the sending unit or the fitting for the engine fuel line.
I'd buy a new tank, but it seems I'd have to get one made as I have been unable to find a replacement tank that will fit in that space without siginificant rework to that compartment. So we are going to stay with the old tank. Of course now its very easy to quickly get to the tank.
In fact, the only thing that look remotely wonky is the barbed fitting for the line that feeds gas to the engine. There's a bunch of crud built up on that where it connects to the elbow of the valve. And while the tank is out, I'd like to replace that. It appears to be a one way check valve that has a right angle elbow.
As Sunbird parts are hard to find, can anyone give me some ideas on where I can find that valve? I'm finding regular 90 degree elbows and straight Not 90 degree anti siphon valves. I'm trying to find a 90 degree anti siphon valve.
Thanks.
