I would go vinyl. Easy to clean and last a long time.

Re: Sunbrella marine grade fabric?

Sunbrella and Dickson marine fabrics are good for tops and covers, but I would shy away from the upholstery part. There are some manufacturers that offer that as an option, but having been in the upholstery business for 18 years now, I can tell you that it never holds up.

The sunbrella is much stiffer to sit on and won't soften up until it loses it's water repellancy. Once it loses that, it allows water to get into the foam and underlying base material. Now, if you never, ever, ever get the interior of your boat wet, go for it. You won't have to worry about the water, but we can deal with the food and suntan lotion stains at a later time.

If it's patterns that you want. go to a local upholstery shop. They can provide you with literally hundreds of vinyl samples that are patterned with everything from stripes to plaids to paisley, to multi-color paint splatter. Vinyls aren't just solids anymore. I have samples from neon colors to animal prints to reptile hide patterns. It's not just white any longer.

Try the local upholstery shops first. You'll have better materials and more selection that the fabric store.

Also, the mark-up at a shop might only be 25% if they're not doing any work. You'll pay 150% mark-up at the retail store. Plus, the retail fabric shops usually have lower quality vinyl and you'll want the marine grade for your boat. Visit boat to see the difference. Your upholsterer will be able to provide you with all of the necessary differences.

I have had good success using Sunbrella for cushions and inserts for boat seats. The fabric makes the cushion less hot to sit on in the sun and the cleaning is easy with bleach and Woolite (u can go to the Sunbrella web site to see cleaning instructions).

The furniture fabric version of Sunbrella does allow water into the cushion but it also allows the foam to dry quickly and completely.

In the overall, it is a matter of what you like as far as the look goes.

Vinyl and Sunbrella both bring different performance issues and both will work well.

Happy Boating!!!

My bimini top is Sunbrella(seems to last forever) and my seats are vinyl. I like the vinyl for my seats due to price, availability(any fabric store), lots of colors/styles, easy to work with, waterproof, and cheap enough to replace any time.

Re: Sunbrella marine grade fabric?

Fireman431 makes some valid points about stiffness and water retention, so we recommend swapping marine Sunbrella for furniture Sunbrella. Same fabric, but softer for seating and cushions. Use reticulated foam and a bottom panel made from Sunbrella Shade or an open weave vinyl mesh fabric for quick water drainage. All cushions eventually retain some water, if not through the fabric, then through the seams. So a cushion that will quickly drain will dry fast and help avoid mildew. Ask for Tenara or a high UV sewing thread and youve got a great looking cushion that dries quickly, wont fade and is easy to maintain.
