I believe the 4Runner is rated for 6000lbs, not sure what load the hitch is rated for? New boat is 4000lbs....I need a new truck to tow this right?

Your going to be pushing it. I have a Sunesta also, they are heavy boats for their size. You need to add in the weight of the trailer, fuel, water, accessories and see where you end up. You wil probably be right at the mark. Make sure the brakes on the 4Runner and trailer are top condition.

I'd see what the whole package weighs: boat, trailer, fuel, gear, etc. to make that determination. Remember that adding gear and people into the 4Runner reduces the payload you can tow as well. Also, what distances are you planning on towing? 10 miles, 100 miles, 500 miles?

My 18 foot Chaparral is 4000lbs on the single axle trailer...your Sunesta is going to be substantially heavier than my set up. In that early to mid 2000's era, Chaparrals were built unabashedly heavy. My tow rig is rated for 6700lbs and I would be cautious pulling your Sunesta but could certainly handle it.

Looked it up on NADA and the 4000lbs is only the dry weight of the boat. Add on another 1000-1200 for a tandem trailer plus your fuel weight and any junk you put in the boat.

From what I saw the v8 4x4 4runner is rated for 7k. Definitely check on what hitch it has and max tongue weight + everything else already mentioned

Many of the Chaps were packaged with really heavy shorelandr trailers. My single axle, for the 18 footer is close to 1000lbs...it takes two people to lift the tongue of it to move it when empty. I think if the op weighed the whole package he'd be surprised.

I'll add that I'm a bit of a bad *** and still takes me and someone with less badassness to lift it.

Do those towing specs take the hood scoop into account?

Lol, add 5HP and 50lbs of towing capacity for every Edelbrock/Jegs/Summit sticker, too.

To be honest, though, I always liked the scoop on the 'Runners. However, they got hideous with the re-design in 2009.

I tried hard to find a Sport trim edition with the hood scoop and eventually gave up since they arent that common.
I think you have the muscle, how fast are you going? 65? I think the short wheelbase might be more of an issue rather brakes.

I actually think that if you have a Monster Energy sticker you get another 2hp.

A client of mine has this exact truck with the hood scoop and other than the center stack and old school navigation, it could pass as a much newer SUV IMO. Funny how they get so much torque out of that v8 in comparison to the relatively low HP.

I would recomend a different tow vehicle. I have a 2009 Bryant 233 and a 2004 4runner V-8. At 1 ft shorter and 900 pounds lighter dry weight I can say I would not go any bigger. I had to put airbags in it, my 05 Chap 180 ssi squated the rear, and make sure the tires were fully filled at the 40Psi cold to make me comfortable towing it. I would say I'm at the limit but am not near the 7000 lb capacity.

I see so many squatted down body on frame suv's all summer during tow season. The 180 is the lightest Chap at 800lbs dry weight less than the next model up meaning it surprises me how little it takes to squat down these suv's. I see lots of the old body Explorer in particular squatted way down. One reason I like the GM body on frame suv's such the GMT360 body is they've come with the automatic airbags/built in compressor for many years as did their minvans and some cars.

You can save a good bit ($2-3K) by not getting 4x4. Do you really need it in Southern Cali?
