I was backing a 14 ft flatbottom boat down a ramp with my wife's camaro. I didn't remember the dropoff at the end of the concrete. Also I was used to launching the boat with my truck. The camaro dropped off the end of the ramp...got stuck and I spun the wheels which only made the car sink. I opened the door not thinking how low slung the car was. Water flowed into the car and got my butt wet, and the seats...a man driving a kubota tracter pulled me out. Had to dismantle the seats, dry them out... also had to take the carpet out and dry it out. Think I'll use the trck nex time.

Re: sunk camaro

I fish near the powerline for crappie (white perch as they call them in east tex.) , theres a creek channel running close to the 3rd or fourth tower (go online and you can see this on terraserver). This time of the year the thermocline is 14 or 15 ft deep if you pull your bait up and it's dead youre fishing too deep (you can buy the best bait at army navy store in lufkin) the temperature change will kill em. I use slip corks and shiners sometimes. The last time I went I used 1/16 white tube jigs and just drop them down about 14 ft, don't jig them, just pull up on them every once and awhile. Make sure they are hanging level. Also use a green flourescent under water light. You can turn the light on and off and it will trigger them to strike. Also it's a good idea to have a rod holder...lost two rod and reels to bass pulling over the side. I also stack two or three tent poles in my pedestal seat holes and ductape reflecter lights to the top of them...use (use DC lightbulbs 50 watts). You can buy them at Walmart in nac.(I think they're in the RV section.) Night fishing is best...no jet skies. You can get the green light at tri lakes tackle in lufkin. Good luck!
Also the bass start schooling on the surface in October. Good luck catfish!

Re: sunk camaro

Hey catfish I went crappie fishing tuesday and as soon as I dropped a jig to about 14 ft. and laid my rod down a bass took it over the side. It was about a foot under water and I almost fell out of the boat grabbing it (up to my armpit in the water). caught a couple of small crappie, no keepers. Bass was about 3 pounds, let him go. Fishing with white metalflake tube jigs, 1 16th ounce. Think night fishing is best. Saw some bass striking on the surface.

Carefull of those bass. Don't want to lose an expensive rig to one. I'm going this Sat morning to try to catch some of those perch. I looked at the topo map and yep a creek channel all areound that powerline. I bet it holds some good fish. I don't have good luck with jigs, so Ill stick to shiners, but if I do, do you use soft plastics or regular jigs--what color?

Re: sunk camaro

I use 1 sixteenth ounce white jigheads with a white tube grub with metalflake has sort of an octopus type tail walmart sells them. ...just drop them down to about 14 to 19 ft.and just let them hang there, move them up and down about 2 inches at a time. They work better when night fishing. that creek channel also comes clost to the point on the east side just past the powerline. fish about 24 ft. deep. Let me know how you do catfish good luck!

Catfish you can also see what they call the hump on terraserver, it shows up as a dark spot(what you're seeing is hydrilla) never fished there. Its on the west side before you get to the powerline. I hear that sinkos work pretty good for bass there.

Re: sunk camaro

Went out Sat morning and others at the spot. Fished elsewhere until 9 then picked up a buddy at the ramp. The spot was free so we hooked up on the powerline and started fishing w/shiners. First pitch brought in a nice keeper bass. We had an awsome morning! Caught 8 good size white perch , several good eating size bream. While we were pulling them in, my freind hooked up his extra pole to fish the bottom with a shiner. Well I guess he threw it into that channel, cause about 20 minutes later the pole starts dancing all over the boat and he finally grabs it before it goes overboard. He starts pulling in what seems a tree stump, and get the fish to the surface and looks to be at least a 12 lb channel blue cat. My friend tied a bad knot though and before I could grab him he breaks the knot and swims off. Boy was I dissapointed, but we still had plenty of fish to clean back home. That place is great! I'm going back next Sat. so sorry if I steal all your fish. hehehe

Hey Perchjerker!

I saw you were from Lufkin and just wanted to say hi. I used to live in Diboll for 12 years when I was little. Went back a couple of years ago and cannot believe how big Lufkin has gotten. I remember when the Angelina mall was the only place to go. I used to go to Crown Colony when dad was playing golf and fish. Those were some good ponds. I also heard they moved Temple Inlands headquarters to Austin. I bet that has really put a hurting on the economy in Diboll and Lufkin since then.

Re: sunk camaro

Glad you did some good catfish..my dad has been catching some channell cat on shiners. A guy I work with says he catches channel cat on dead shiners. I tried it and only caught crappie. I've caught up to 17 pounders on trotlines...but that was about 10 yrs ago. What size line are you using and are you tightlining or using slip corks? By the way how deep were you anchored? Tie a palomar knot it's the strongest that I know of. I used to tie an improved clinch but the palomar knot is stronger and won't slip. http://www.fish4fun.com/palomarknot.htm

Yeah trollhole...it's not the greatest here, haven't got a cost of living raise in 2 years. Still love living here. Was born in Virginia and lived in South Carolina and memphis tennessee. Dad was in the navy. Moved here in 1964. Best place I've ever lived. My family is from the pollok area.I work at the fire dept. in lufkin and some guys from diboll work there.

Re: sunk camaro

Hey perch, well for white perch I use an ultralight diawa spinning rig with 10 lb Stren line. It is far better than any other line i've used and WILL NOT buy any other brand. I was tightling because I don't think that I know how to rig up a bopper for fishing that deep. I fish were hitting so fast that I would think that it would be in the way. But, do you think that by using a bopper I would have better luck? They do bite awfully soft! We did not anchor as I do not yet have one for my tiny boat, we just tied onto the powerline pole. I tie a differnt knot than the polamar, I'm not sure the name of it but I simply put the line through the hole once, making a double line, then I make a single loop and wrap the loose end around the doulbled line 5 times and tighten. It will not slip and is very quick to tie. I think I will go back there this Sat morning with the wife and try to catch some more of those catfish witrh the wife. She'll LOVE that...hehehe

Re: sunk camaro

Hey catfish, only caught 4 crappie and a bass. Hung some big fish but they kept hanging me up in the brush. Took my boat to the dealer yesterday before going to the lake because the telltale wasn't spraying as hard as it was when they serviced it when I bought it in march. All they did was hook up the earmuffs and a water hose to it and charged me 42 dollars for 45 minutes labor including working on the steering which I know is warranty because it has to be a defective part. Couldn't fix the popping in the steering wheel which was that way when I bought it. Told me that there is nothing that can be done about it. I was told by the salesman when I bought it "the warranty covers anything unless you just go out there and run into the bridge or something." I thought I had a good warranty but was lied to. If you are thinking about buying a new boat email me at captainphd@hotmail.com. and I'll tell you who sold me the boat. It's ok also if you want to email me about anything else.

http://store1.yimg.com/I/coolfj40_1760_248858207

Wow! Who did you but your boat from so I'll know never to use him! Is your boat running hot? And if so, i'snt your new motor under warranty? I can't believe they charged you for that?!?!
Sounds like you had a decent timwe fishing. Did you try that dark spot? Were you using jigs again? Also check out the web address at the top. She's my fishin' buddy! I tried to put the picture on the post, but counldn't figure out how to.
Hey, do you ever fish Lake Kurth?

Re: sunk camaro

Don't think it's running hot but by the time the heat alarm goes of it's usually too late, or that's what I'm told. Water coming out of the telltale isn't too hot.
Fished lake kurth and caught a 5 lb hybrid striper and some good size black crappie on shiners and jigs. Am told that the hybrids run up to 10 pounds. They school late in the evening in the powerhouse cove. Also caught a 3 ft. gator on a crankbait. Wondered if he would hit it, started to grab him by the tale but that would have just turned out to be another stupid human trick and I've posted too many of them allready. There's a real big gator in that cove. I saw him eating a gar and he looked like something out of crocodile hunter. Guy I work with says he is supposed to be the largest in the state. Also says that he heard they put problem gators in this lake, not sure about that but if you go up into the coves there are lots of stumps and they must be cypress stumps because I hit one just plowing along and it broke my propshaft. You can probably guess who I bought my boat from. Also there are no water body records posted for lake kurth. So if you catch anything It should qualify for one. I used jigs and shiners and no I didn't try the hump. Like your fishin buddy.

Re: sunk camaro

Before I bought my first boat this summer all me and my buddy had to fish in was this narrow canoe. Well, we would always meet at Kurth to fish since he lives in Lufkin. One day we were fishing and rowing towards that big round drain. We were comming close to what I thought was a stump (about half the size of the canoe!)and suddenly the stump starts going underwater, and we were really close. I don't think my heart ever beat so fast in all my life. We layed into those oars as hard as possible and got back to the pier. I will NEVER go back there in a canoe, I would be too afraid to tump over then... Your're right, that is the biggest damnn gator I have ever seen in my life. I've heard that they were becomming a problem out there and need to be hunted or thinned. What if some kid fell in the lake?

Re: sunk camaro

Did you see the guys with their boats parked in the only 2 placed you can pull your boat up on shore at the ramp? I got a new boat and usually anchor it in aboue chest deep water and back my trailer down because the only place left to park it is on the concrete, friend of mine knocked a big chunk out of the fiberglass on the bow of his boat. sometimes one of the guys is real nice and will hold your boat off the concrete while you back down. They have perch traps beside the ramp because what they are doing is juglining. Makes me feel a little uneasy with all those dead perch in the water...gator bait you know. There must be hundreds of gar in the powerhouse cove, I guess thats why that big gator stays in the area. A friend of mine was running his trolling motor and standing on the front casting deck and saw that big gator lying on the bottom in 3 ft of water. Raked his rod across the gator's back and it took off like a rocket. I used to scuba dive a lot and a dive buddy said how clear kurth was and wanted to go diving there. I found out about the gators before we decided to go or not. Have dived the creek channel between the island and that point at lake nacodoches and it's pretty spooky. Anchored my boat in the creek channel so I could come back up the anchor rope and not get run over. There are huge logs in it, good place for catfish to hide. My uncle drove a dozer when they impounded the lake and said that they just pushed all the logs into the creek channel.

Re: sunk camaro

I'm not that brave; I would dare go deep under that water as in scuba, just not my thing. I bet it is spooky under there. How far can you see? Do you use a light? Could you see anything swimming by or in the creek channel--I'll have to try to fish that part after I buy an anchor. Well, I'll be on Lake Nac Tommorrow morning so I'll say hi if your around. Bye the way, do you know any place on the internet where I could see pictures taken under the water at freshwater lakes?
