Re: sunk camaro

Hi catfish, haven't been able to post for a few days (computer problems). <br /> Do you mean the underwater island that you can see on terraserver?---(http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?=1&s=10&x=1632&y=17496&z=15&w=2<br /><br />Or this island?--(http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=11&x=819&y=8751&z=15&w=2<br /><br />Here are some scuba photos...I've dived in both of these lakes. Lake travis is very clear, I've stood on the bottom 60 ft. deep and could look up and see the sun. <br /><br />lake travis <br /> http://allenhost.com/gallery/VariousImages?page=1 <br /><br />tyler state park <br /> http://www.egnie.com/chapter.asp?chapterID=35 <br /> http://www.egnie.com/chapter.asp?ChapterID=34 <br /><br />Saw a 10 lb bass swimming around in the West side swim area, it some years ago when there was an aluminum swim platform was there. There were people diving off of it and splashing around. This bass was just cruising around and didn't seem spooked by all the activity. They are spooked by the bubbles escaping from a dive regulator. One day I parked my boat at this swim area and did a short dive and saw several bass which were about 2 or 3 pounds. I went back and sat on my boat and caught a few of them on plastic worms. Smaller bass aren't shy at all around divers and will sometimes follow you. I timed 2 bass following a dive buddy and me at toledo and they followed us for 38 minutes. My buddy likes to dive on the bottom and was kicking up a lot of silt. I finally figured out that they were following his fin wash because he was scaring crawdads..the crawdads freeze when they see a predator (bass)and the bass were swimming about 2 ft behind his fin wash. You use a light when night diving and can get close enough to bass to touch em. It's real spooky when you are diving without a buddy. (very dangerous and not recommended) Dived mostly in Toledo bend and you can see 10-15 ft. Me and a dive buddy did a night dive to 86 ft. We were diving the river channel near the dam. Surface temp was 76F at 86 ft it was 45F. We were trying to go to 110ft-the deepest part of toledo. At 65ft. the river channel starts and it is a vertical drop to the bottom. My buddy's light went out at 86 ft.and we had to come back up. Probably the spookiest dive I've made...you look down while decending and all you see is a black void. Can see lots of big bass at night at about 12 to 15 ft. It's legal to spear catfish on the louisiana side. <br /> Last time I went to Nac I used 1\16th white jigheads with a white tube and this seemed to work better than shiners. Jigs were catching bigger fish and it gets aggraviting trying to get the hook out...they seem to swallow the hook when using shiners. Might go friday or saturday. See see you at the lake.

Re: sunk camaro

Catfish you dont have to buy and expensive anchor. Go to a scrap metal recycle yard and you can find a chunk of iron for several cents a pound. B&B is a good place to go, its on hwy 59 on your left just before you get to the lufkin city limits coming from nacogdoches. Get two for both ends of the boat. Get a thick nylon rope at walmart they sell it by the foot. You need about 35 ft or more of rope for each anchor. My anchors are very heavy and I always keep a knife in my pocket in case I go over the side with the anchor.

Re: sunk camaro

Went to nac today. Only caught 2 crappie and one 2 pound bass. Was trying to untie the front anchor rope..on knees leaning over the bow and went in headfirst...had to swim to the transom to climb back in. I've done that only one other time.<br />Was tied to the buoy cable in front of Rayburn Dam striper fishing. It was real cold and I had on chest waders, and they were generating. I went over the cable and had to swim about 3 ft. Almost didn't make it.

Re: sunk camaro

Catfish...boy I did a stupid thing yesterday. My dogs were barking at a copperhead, my son came and got me and said the dogs were barking at a copperhead in the woods. It was about 5pm and I went out to kill the snake. Couldn't see it so I got a stick to try to make it move so I could see it. I guess the stick was an inch too short because it bit me on the flip off finger right on the end. Man it hurt like hell, we measured it and it was 2 feet long. Put me in the hospital overnight. My son (sean) killed it with a pellet rifle. (found out later he had been shooting it with a bb pistol which was why the snake was PO'ed. I couldn't see it because it was buried under the leaves with about 1 inch of its tail sticking out and 1 inch of its head sticking out. Moral of the story---get a longer stick.

Re: sunk camaro

Hey Perch! Glad to hear from you again. Man, those diving stories are incredible. I would love to be able to see those fish swimming around; have you ever seen a big gar underwater? Now that would be spooky. But, I haven't the aptitude to go underwater like that, I guess a little too spooky for me. Sorry to hear about the snakebite; I'm surprised you seen any out this time of year--but I guess it hasn't been cold enough yet for them to become dormant. A couple of years ago I went canoeing in Arkansas with my family. We were having a good time except that the water was too low and the heavy Plastic canoes we rented where draging bottom a lot, so I would have to get out and push them at times. I was noticing that there where a lot of red copperhead swimming near the rocky banks on this river (forgot the name). Well, at this one point, everyone had to get out to get the canoes across, so I tell my (very stupid) uncle to hold onto one while I push the other. Well, the dumb *** lets it go--moving pretty fast downstream. I get to shore and start runnning and catch it in the water, well about this time I feel a sting on my calf but did not think anything of it-- then saw the snake swimm away. Did not put 2+2 together till well on our way downstream, I start felling dizzy and sick. Look down and big knotty snake bite on my leg Right in the middle on nowhere. Wife and mom start freaking out, so we beach the canoes and I sit still and rest-- nothing else could be done. Amazingly, About an hour later I was feeling well enough to continue boating-- I think the snake only got a partial hit on me. By the end of the day I was feeling real tired though, but so was everyone else (7 mile trip). Never even went to the doctor-which really pissed off my mom and wife.

Re: sunk camaro

By the way, I have heard that there are 2 towns and a graveyard under Toledo Bend, Have you been to any of them? Now THAT would be SPOOKY!!! Thanks for the underwater picture links-- good shots. oh, if your going out to Nac anytime soon, be sure you have your liscence and PFD, I got "stopped" by the lake police who checked me out 2 weeks ago, they where going around and checking everyone. I'll try that place to look for some kind of anchor, but I have little time since I work in Longview.

Re: sunk camaro

Hi catfish. We took a canoe trip down the buffalo river...I think it might be the same one you're talking about. I thought the water was too cold for snakes. I was in the back of the canoe and my wife starts paddling backwards. I looked around her and saw two cottonmouths with their heads about a foot above the water heading for us. We paddled backwards and got out on a gravel bar.<br />I later learned that this is the way they compete for a female. Did you rent a canoe from Durst canoe rentals? It's near the town of Yellville Ark. Thats where we rented the canoe from.

Re: sunk camaro

Hey Perch, I can't remem the name of the river but it wasn't the buffalo. Can't remember that canoes retal either. We canoed from southern missouri to Arkansas border. My entire family lives in Springdale and Rogers. We go up there once or twice a year to visit. It is an awsome place to go for all kinds of outdoor activities. When I was a kid in boy scouts we usede to go up to the mountains there and backpack all around-- I'd love to get the time to do that again. My grandma calls me all the time to tell me how cold it is there (she's from Texas too). My mother works at the springdale newspaper and she saved an article for me about a guy who pulled an 80 lb Striper out of the water with his bare hands. The story said that he was out with his family on thier pontoon baot swimming when he heard something hit hard on the boat. He looked a saw a stunned hugh fish, so he jumped in and grabbed it. He said that just when he did, the thing came to life and started dragging him under that water. I don't know how he kept hold of it to get it in the boat?? I saw the picture too...One big fish!

Hi catfish. Was it a gamewarden or...? I havent seen any gamewardens or anyone else at nac.lately. What type of boat were they driving?<br />About 15 yrs. ago there was a guy who was working as a lake patrol and a game warden who lived close to the lake and you could count on getting your pfds fish and fishing license being checked on every trip.

Re: sunk camaro

The city of Nacogdoches has jurisdiction at Lake Nac for some strange and reason. So the city cops are seen there regularly. The city cops have a, weel , what looks like a bay boat with a center console, and that is what they stopped me in. Believe it or not, the guy that stopped me is a state trooper, or was one. I remember seeing him all the time as a trrooper. But I have seen these guys a lot around that lake. My buddy was stopped last summer by the game warden after he retrieved his boat. Almost ticked him for not haveing a fire extinguisher because he has plywood floors in his jon boat.

I'll be on the lookout for 'em. Here are some photos I took of that copperhead bite. Pretty gruesome...when I was admitted to the hospital they thought I might lose part of my finger. Went to the doc today and he says it's going to heal but I'm not going to be able to work for 3 weeks. Going fishing as soon as I can hold a fishing rod.<br /><br />click on this link to see slideshow<br /> http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/lfkfire/slideshow?&.dir=/snakebite&.src=ph&.view=t <br /><br />or click on the link below to see photos<br /><br /> http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/lfkfire/lst?.dir=/snakebite&.view=t

Re: sunk camaro

Man! That is really BAD. I know those snakes have hemotoxins in them that break up the blood and tissues on contact (or do they have neurotoxins?). I guess that snake that bit me barely got some in me because my skin did not start to decompse too badly. I bet that sucker hurts like fire too! Does the doc say not to get it wet?<br />Here is a really cool website I found yesterday; I am going to start learning to bowhunt soon and this place is great and has a lot of cool pictures: http://www.netexasoutdoors.com/

Re: sunk camaro

Hi catfish. Only coral snakes have neurotoxins. Copperheads have the weakest venom of all the pit vipers. Snake was mad because sean had been shooting him with a bb pistol. He probably injected a lot of venom because he was agitated. Can't blame the snake. Don't blame my son either he was just trying to kill the snake. He feels pretty bad about it but I told him it's nobodys fault. I'm going snake hunting with my pellet gun as soon as my finger heals.

Re: sunk camaro

I stand corrected. Canebreak rattlers also have neurotoxins and some hemotoxins. I talked to a guy who was bitten on the hand by one of his pet canebreaks (timber rattlesnake) He was in icu on a ventilator for a couple of days. It got him with one fang and there was only a dark bruise where he was bitten. There was surprisingly small amount off tissue damage. Don't know if it was an anyphylactic reaction to the antivenom or the snake poison that caused him to have to be put on the ventilator. He said he had them penned up in his back yard and after he was bitten he turned them loose. Coral snakes have venom that is about the same as cobra venom but probably in a smaller amount. Doesn't take much and it can kill you just the same as a cobra. Probably the most dangerous snake around here but most people are bitten while handling them. They arent agressive and do have small fangs. They will chew on you but they dont have to because the fangs will inject the venom. They can also bite you on places other than the hand. They can open their mouth wide enough to bite you on any body surface.

Re: sunk camaro

Hey Perch, how have you been man? Hope that finger is healing well and not giving you too many difficulties! I was wondering, have you noticed how the pecans are doing. I went to Pecan Park here in Nac yesterday planning to fill several big grocery bags full, but I discovered that most of the pecans are still on the trees! They should be falling right now. I think the warm weather has something to do with it though. Maybe with the cold front this weekend they will start falling well. I only got about 2 pounds last night.

Re: sunk camaro

Hi catfish. I went to the plastic surgeon and he cut away some more dead tissue a couple days ago check out that website link. I update photos every few days and he says I've gotta be off for 6 more weeks. Doc said he sees about 6-10 copperhead bites a year and mine was very unusual because of the severity of the damage. A paramedic I work with teaches a class on snakebite and he want's to use my photos. Went to walmart tonight and bought a .22 rifle. Can't hit snakes too well with a 357 mag. I might do some squirrel hunting...have 3 part fox and part rat terriers and I went outside to shoot the .22 and they got real excited and started trailing. Sean shot the rifle and I had to hold one of the dogs to keep her from getting in the line of fire and she bit me! (not very hard) These dogs have never been hunted with but have a very strong hunting instinct. Have seen a few pecans...we have a tree at our main fire station. Some are green and some are ripe. You been fishing lately? I havent had a chance to go but the crappie should be a bit deeper because the water temp. is colder. I used to crappie fish at the dam at nac. during cold weather and found a creek channel with brush in it. It's exactly 44 ft. deep in the channel. We fished it in Feb. about 15 years ago and caught some huge crappie and a couple of big bass. I took a small plastic tag thermometer that I used for diving, tied it to my line along with some heavy sinkers dropped it to the bottom and the water was warmer on the bottom of the lake than the surface by maybe 10 degrees. It was 38 degrees and raining so we stretched a plastic tarp over the pedestal seats to keep dry and also used some jack daniels. I was so hypothermic because of drinking the jack daniels that when I got home I just wrapped a thermal blanket around me and passed out. It was the best I ever slept. Catfish click on the link and check out these photos. <br /> http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/lfkfire/slideshow?.dir=/fishin+pictures&.view=t

Re: sunk camaro

Hey Perch, man that finger is giving you problems! I know that if I am out in the woods hunting or camping and I see a snake, it ruins the whole trip because I am not doing anything else except looking for snakes. Hope that doesn't happen to you when your out squirrel hunting. There are a lot of acorns out now and I've seen plenty of 'em, so you will probobly do good. I use a .22 to because I don't like digging out all that shot out of a little squirrel. Those dogs of your seem to want to get on some action, bet they would be good to dig up rabbits too. There are millions of rabbits at Lake Kurth--if you could hunt there, but I think hunting is limited to Abitibi members. I've been real busy, transfering to a new job in Henderson--a lot closer that Longview-- and haven't been able to get on the water at all. My in-laws will be in this weekend so that will blow it, but I have all of next week of due to my transition so I think I might try out Lake Nac or Kurth. You seem to know Lake Nac like the back of your hand! That striper your caught out at Kurth, bet you had fun catching him! Did you use shiners or lures? I'd like to try to locate some of those big Stripers!! That sure is a cool old picture of when you were a kid--wish I had some like that. Mine would all be with catfish caught out of the river. Next time I catch a big mess of fish I'll post a pic--we just got a new digital camera(el cheapo freebe) but it doesn't work on my ancient computer. I'm goina buy a new compuiter next month (starting grad school) so will try to post some then.

Re: sunk camaro

Hi catfish. I caught the striper on a small silver crankbait. What happened was a school of stripers started a feeding frenzy about 20 ft. from my boat so I picked up a rod and was so excited that I backlashed it. Picked up the other rod and caught him on it. Don't like the way stripers taste but i've been told if you cut out the red meat it tasts ok. Also tastes good cooked as blackened fillets...real spicy. I also caught a 3 foot long gator on the same crankbait...just playing with him. I just slowly reeled him up to the boat and wiggled the crankbait out of his mouth. To locate the stripers go to the power house cove, it's the last cove on the right. They school on the surface real late in the evening. I also caught some pretty good size crappie on tube jigs in the same cove...they hang out close to the cattails. Caught a few crappie near the powerhouse. Watch out for stumps in this cove. I have to use my trolling motor and polarized shades to see the stumps. Are you going to move when you start this new job and are you still going to fish nac?

Re: sunk camaro

Thanks for the tips on Kurth. No moving for me anytime soon. I live in Nac now and drive to Longview everyday--long drive--my new job will be in Henderson so it will be a lot closer--good. I currently put 750 miles a week on my wife's car since it gets the best gas mileage. Thsi is before and after work! My new job is only about 40 miles from Nac. I'll be fishin' Nac for a while. We don't plan to live anywhere else, my wife is from Dallas and I'm from Jefferson, so Nac is a good comprimise (if you consider where I'm from)!! We both went to college at SFA and meet there. My wife teaches in Lufkin--at St. Cyprian's Episcopal School; ever heard of it? I'll actually be teaching a class there next week on my week off, about the 19th century pioneers. I'm goina' show them how beef jerky is made. You have any good recipies?
