Re: Sunray Escapade

i guess in 77 they added weight to it. they did howver change the name to sv-475 and changed the weight back to 605 lbs and 55 hp. but definately a beautiful boat. how's goes the project anyway? as far as the hull id number, if you were looking at the transom, it would be on the top right hand corner of the transom. that is you primary number. then on the top of the transom where the motor sits, should be a metal strip. under that, if you go that far with your rebuild, is a secondary number.

project is moving along still waiting for decking material to arrive and its really flippin me off, i'm working on a really crazy idea for an interior but want to see if i can wedge it in to the rear of the boat, then complete the deck store the interior for the winter and batten down the hatches for the winter, and order parts and design the dash and final interior pieces

Re: Sunray Escapade

Just a lil update:

Grinded the tops off the old stringers started with 24 grit fibre disc well after the first fibre disc chewed up and damn near took my arm off i went back to the metal grinding disc and damn:D took about 1hr to grind the tops off the stringers was able to dig out the old wood from the outter two stringers and got about 50-60% of the middle stringer wood removed

DSCF0806.jpg

I know its been asked before but what would work best as new stringers? could i use pressure treated 2x4's cut down for the outter two and a pressure treated 2x8 for the middle stringer, i would still coat each stringer with resin on all sides

Nice update Escapade.

It's been said before I'm just sayin' (so don't jump all over me) I wouldn't use PT wood in the stringers. From what I've read there might be problems with resins bonding to it. Besides a PT chunk of wood is only really rot proof until you drive a nail or screw into or cut it. This opens up the untreated portions of the wood.

I'd use laminated layers of ply (preferable marine grade) and totally saturate them with epoxy to ensapsulate it. Other than going with expensive foams or pourable materials (Seacast) the ply method would offer the best repair unless you're going to sell the boat after you finish it then it'll be someone elses problem down the road.

Re: Sunray Escapade

yeah, i agree with not using the pressure treated with resin. these sunray boats must be built the same way. i use kiln dry 2x4 for outside stringers, and a kiln dry 2x6 for the main beam. i soaked these resin, then used the existing fibreglass sides and wrapped with new fibreglass mat. i'm no expert, but i figured they lasted 31 years before me, they should last beyond me. lol. good luck.

Re: Sunray Escapade

only thing around here is spruce. i got it at the local hardware store. it cost the same as regular 2x4. for the floor i used marine grade 5/8. it cost 50.00 a sheet here, but i think it was worth it. i also soaked the bottom in resin, then the upperside in fiberglass cloth. i also used 2 pieces of 5/8 marine grade plywood bonded together for the transom. it made a nice strong piece. wrapped it in fiberglass mat, then a layer or two of cloth.

Re: Sunray Escapade

boatwindsheildrepair-5.jpg

I drilled out the revets and seperated the bottom of both side windows

boatwindsheildrepair-6.jpg

I've zip tied the ends to keep them together until I get the bolts to secure them properly

boatwindsheildrepair-7.jpg

The hardest one was the main windshield, and is not completly finished as I'm waiting for the lexian to come in before,

Re: Sunray Escapade

I'm missing a few pieces to complete the windsheild, it looks to be either a long bolt or a pin of some sort, anyone help me out with that? pictures....

boatwindsheild-15.jpg

I'm pretty sure I could use a generic machine screw/bolt but if someone has an idea of has replaced these parts before let me know.

does anyone know what these bolts are called so I have a rough idea what I'm looking for at the hardware store???

I took the top out for the first time since I got the boat and the back section is going to need to plastic, but my wife should be able to stitch them in place for me,

I've coated my stringer is 3 layers of resin, I'm going to pick up my plywood for the deck next weekend and get that coated before I choose what I plan on using for the surface of the deck.

Re: Sunray Escapade

I really should pay more attention to my own thread lol

Well the transom was shot, torn it out completly however was not able to remove the cap so I had to "modify" my splash well for now and while I was digging out the mess I split the outer skin of the splash well with a chisel so now that its been repaired and my transom pieces are all cut I've started coating them with resin to seal before a layer of glass goes on then install the first of two layers of the transom

Here is a link to the questions I asked about the transom...

Transom is SOL

Not bad for my first attempt with fibreglass

This is what is left of my splash well that will all be repaired/replaced once the transom is fully installed and cured

a saw cuts, a grinding disk grinds.

It would have taken me all of 5 minutes to remove the top of those stringers with any of a variety of tools,
sawzall, (fine tooth metal blade)
circular saw, (sideways)
grinder with 4 inch diamond steel disk (dewalt $18 works great).
They all cut glass like butter and produce very little glass dust.

make it ez on yourself.

Good work so far, its almost a guarentee if the stringers are shot the transom is also. I would have applied glass to those stringers before installation, its a lot easier to do out of the boat on a trash can. Resin alone will crack.

Re: Sunray Escapade

stingers are not installed I was just test fitting everything before glassing them, and the transom has been removed completely as per pictures and its replacment sitting on my work bench drying after being coated with resin, before I glass it and prep for the first layer to be laminated to the hull.

Re: Sunray Escapade

went to a buddies place for burgers and beer so didn't get to update yesterday but here we go...

Picked up some parts for my boat new steering cable, man it felt great to see new parts for her finally
steeringcable1.jpg

got both layers of my transom installed had some awesome angle iron laying around so that kept everything nice and tight as the glue is drying, all the holes that are there now will be used transom drain, splash well drain, and looks to be transom hold downs/ anchor points for towing tubes.

transomrepair1.jpg

transomrepair2.jpg

transomrepair3.jpg

right now the transom boards are higher then the old splash well so I can router them down even with the splash well for glassing, I'll also be adding a 1/4 inch piece of ply from where I cut the splash-well to make it easier to reglass back together

Once everything harden's up I'm going to fill in the voids with PB so I can hopfully get the transom itself glassed in place this week if the wife will let me:D
