hello I have a tanaka 300 3hp outboard that I recently bought. It had been sitting for awhile and wouldn't start so I figured the 2 stroke had gummed up the jets and such an easy fix right? The guy I bought it from said he put a new plug in it and it wont get gas so I drained the tank, took the carb apart and cleaned the jets looked at all parts. Its getting a good flow into the bowl and it seems to be coming up the needle slide in the carb it will not pull it into the cylinder though. If I pour a little in the cylinder it will fire for a sec then die. It seems to pull real well I don't think its got bad rings but this thing is killing me my hands are blistered from pulling it:facepalm:

sounds like a multi part problem, I would disassemble the carb and soak it for a day them blow compressed air through every orifice, also sounds like the rings are sticking and she needs a decarb and the exhaust port cleaned out...basically it sounds like its gummed up perty bad or worn completely out.

Pull off the carb, remove exhaust plate and exhast chamber/manifold, remove cylinder(4 phillips screws), check/clean/free up stuck rings, clean carbon from exhaust ports. All this very easy to do and not complicated at all( maybe an hour total). Good Luck!

The cylinder was held on by 4 studs with nuts I was looking for the phillips screws and took it apart at the crank case woops. So I removed the nuts on the cylinder and pulled it cleaned a good amount of carbon out, and the ring on the front of the piston doesn't move as freely as the one behind it so I opened it a bit and now they both move freely. Now how do you get that darn cylinder back on I'm having trouble getting it back on the piston.

Be sure rings are located with their little brass locating pins(one pin in each groove), this keeps the rings from rotating around. Use a bit of grease, squeeze rings in gently with fingers, slide cylinder right down over piston/rings, don't force it or you can break the rings. That upper piston ring tends to get stuck with carbon, I use carb cleaner and rotate rings around to loosen them up. Exhaust port gets some carbon in it, easy to scrape off. Good Luck!

Wouldn't that suggest a sticking float/needle?

My 2nd on the stuck float needle. Once you get this motor running, it's almost foolproof. Good Luck!

you know I would think that but the bowl is always full when checked and continues to run. I checked the motion on the needle seat and it seems to work good who knows mabye I;ll just buy the carb kit for but I am reluctant to pay more for the kit than I did the motor

have you had the carb off? you say gas is not getting past the carb to the cylinder....if not the float suggest to me your jetting is gummed up....beyond that the reeds could be sticking...beyond that, well part it out and sell it on ebay, how much trouble could one little motor be....

Reeds sticking? I don't think this little motor has reeds. I'm going to try and adjust the float level mabye it is a little to low. the jets are very clean looking and I also soaked them in carb cleaner.

Are you sure you have a good strong spark and plug is not fouled? There's really not much to go wrong with these little carbs, just a jet, a needle, float valve. There's no reeds on these motors. Double check fuel flow from tank, lines, stick a wire through that crappy little petcock with it in open position to ensure flow, fuel line to carb, needle valve. Keep at it, you'll get it running!

I didn't realise there were no reeds so this must be a 3rd port engine., I took my TOB300 out yesterday...It ran OK but its Piece of junk as far as I'm concerned and as gummy as they get so no wonder they were banned in callyfornia....no match for a Eska 3hp, Tecumseh's are a much cleaner running engine.
I took the thing in as trade last year and hadn't run it much except onece and a few times in the tank...I realize now the tanaka has no place on a major river or a minor one for that matter or even a pond, I wouldn't even consider it a kicker motor although it will push but barley enough to hold a light aluminum 14fter in a summer current on the Ohio, craigs list is a good place for it...

I was never so disappointed in a 3hp engine in my life, I guess my experiences with a weed eater has baised me to even hate the engine sound, every Asian carp in the river jump at me with the Tanaka...I'm used to out running them with the 7.5's
