Ok, OK, here I am, Been fishing and just got the boat put away. Caught one nice Bass, and a few small ones. Anyway as to the oil, I have heard no bad things about it, here is a report on a virgin oil analysis.

SuperTech Synthetic VOA

I switched from castrol syntec to the walmart full synthetic 5-w30in my 1999 suburban. I noticed no difference other than the price! They both come out the same color they go in after 4-5000 miles.

Thanx all, I am going to try it in the wifes car. I have been running Rotela T in every thing I own, but things change and so must I. Never had a problem with the Rotela though, just hoping for longer lasting engine and better fule economy:)

I would think the Rotella to be a better oil all around, due to its additive package. (Probably at least double) Id stay with it. IMHO. All though I like the Chevron Dello 400 in a diesel oil myself. You can easily go 5,000 + miles with either. Even though the Super Tech oil shows to be decent, It is still a wannabe oil in my opinion. Better than a regular oil, but maybe not better than a diesel oil.

You might get a little better mileage with the Supertech, but minimal.

If you really want better fuel economy, spend your money on GTA Fuel enhancer. I know, You are probably getting tired of hearing it, but Im telling you it works. My Ranger 4 liter went from 16-16 1/2 to 18 to and from work and short trips, Havnt checked the car yet.

I have no affiliation.

GTA FUEL ENHANCER

I have to say that the Rotella has served me well, I have had no engine trouble since I switched to it. And I have been known to ride hard and put up wet! If I can get a gain in mile per gal. I may be able to convence myself that the more expensive synth oils may be worth their price. I did resurch a lot of dino oils before the switch to Rotella T oil, and I'll admit I have not resurched as much on synth oils! At this point I only use 1 oil in everything!

I too use Rotella in everything I got.
I have 2 diesel trucks and 2 diesel tractors and a fleet of 8 Astro vans that gets it.

No problem to date.

What is the difference between diesel motor oils and gasoline motor oils?

Can both be interchanged?

Ken

Re: Super Tech Full Synthetic oil

Using a diesel oil in a gas engine is a little known secret! The detergents in them keep your engine spotless inside, and they have very good storage potential. They also have more friction modifiers in them. All in all, they are a very fine oil. The only reason I like the Chevron Dello 400 is that there Base stock is a Hydrocracked petrolium oil, similar to the Castrol Syntec without the synthetic price. So, for a diesel oil price, you are getting an allmost synthetic oil. Either will go past the 5,000 mile mark in a gas engine, and shown to go to 7,500 in some used oil analysis.

I posted, and then saw Kenimpzooms question. No, you can use a diesel oil in a gas engine, but not the other way around. The reason being that diesels need the anti acid formulation due to the sulfer in the fuel, they also need the extra detergents and the friction modifiers because of the compression they run. Want to ruin your diesel, run an automotive oil in it for awhile.

Re: Super Tech Full Synthetic oil

Mercedes Benz may give some insight into the usefulness of full synthetics in 4 stroke gasoline engines.

Both of my MLs have had the same system. There is a sensor in the crankcase that measures the oil electrical conductivity and relays that info to the system 'puter. Contaminates alter the conductivity. The 'puter runs an algorithm that includes miles since last change, miles between shutdowns, oil temp and other stuff I don't remember. It then calculates projected miles until the oil requires changing. Typical miles between 'puter signalled oil change is 12,000 to 15,000 miles. The filter is changed at every oil change.

My driving patterns include 50 to 800 miles between engine cool downs.

MB requires 100% synthetic oil ONLY for this system to be accurate. They will allow Castrol and other 100% synthetic oils but recommend Mobil 1. Petro oil or blend voids the warranty. I suspect that the Super Tech Synthetic would be acceptable, since it is made by Pennzoil/Quaker state.

I am told that city drivers who make many short trips average 5,000 to 8,000 between changes.

Changing Mobil 1 when the puter says to change it is a LOT less expensive than changing petro oil every 3,000.

I personally do not think I would push the envelope so to speak so far even with the Mobil1 oil. The oil analysis system on any vehicle is not really as good as a real oil anaysis from a company that does this for fleet vehicles. I wouldn go beyond 10,000 if it were me, an I have pushed Mobil1 there before. Now Amsoil would be a different story, you may even get to 25,000 before changing. The additive package is that much better.

C'mon, LD!

Are you suggesting that MB would put their product at risk by using a system that isn't safe?

I don't buy that, and I don't buy that Amsoil is good for about twice the mileage as Mobil 1. If it was MB would require it, or at least accept it.

My ML320 went 130,000 miles using their system and had no measurable loss of compression and used no oil between changes when I traded it. It was still a new engine.

Re: Super Tech Full Synthetic oil

dont get me wrong, I dont mean your practic is going to hurt anything, what I mean is that the system on your car dosnt do a complete analysis. A mercedes will go 250,000 miles with regular oil in it, they are just that good. Even if your oil is loosing most of its additives at over 10,000 miles, it still is probably better than conventional oil. I just wouldnt do it myself. Probably shouldnt even said anything.

As far as the Amsoil goes, it is formulated to go extra miles, Mobil1, (even though a great oil) Isnt and they do not hesitate in saying so.

Well I put the ST in the wifes car this weekend. It has been at 20.5 mpg (on board computer) for a while. If get any gain from it I may, hey I seen Rotella T synthetic at just a little more than the ST! If I had spoted that, well I would have went with it!

Heck LD... almost anything these days will go 250,000. I have a '94 Toyota Celica 1.8 that has 3000 miles before it hits 200,000. And that's with poor oil change habits. BTW.. it still runs perfectly. When did I have a tune-up.. plugs, etc.......ummmmm around 75,000. I think I heard somewhere that there was a timing belt that needed to be changed at 60,000...hmmmm..maybe I should check into that. Love those Toyotas

ae708:

I actually wonder how far a chevy 350 V8 would go if you never changed the oil and just added it when needed? I would bet it would go well over 100,000 miles.

I actually think that synthetic oils are an overkill in most cars and I use it myself. I would normally change my oil at least three times in 10,000 miles. Bt with synthetics I change just one time in that many miles or maybe longer.

You'd have to change the filter though or it would get clogged up. I've torn some engines down that LOOK like the oil had never been changed. :)
