Working in a race shop and watching the 358 CI motors run on the dyno up near 10,000 rpms and survive always makes me wonder what they would do in a boat. If you could get an out drive that could handle the power and play with the cam to get low end torque that would be screamer..
These motors probably weigh less than a standard 5.7.
It would be real bad on fuel though.

They already do. Check any boat powered by an Idmar motor (mastercraft in particular).

Some use the same RPO code as GM to spec the motor. I've seen the LQ9 spec'd in Mastercraft boats several times. Thats the same iron block 6.0L that is in the Cadillac Escalade, and the Silverado SS.

im well aware of the wankel rotary motors i had a 88 turbo rx7 a few years ago the apex seals go bad on those motors quickly and arent easy to replace.. it got so bad i had to pour power steering fluid into my motor to lube them enough to get the motor started.. also the rotary even though its 1.3liters in most cases it weighs as much as a 5.7.. i sold that car to a freind and we swapped a 383 stroker in it and it only added 60lbs..ive seen a turbo rotary in a boat and it hauls but id say you could build a v8 to put out alot more performance and tourqe you will never get out a rotary.. but ill have to disagree with the indestructable part of the rotary ive seen many blow up..but as far as economy i think the rotary wouldnt be a good choice it would be a cool motor for all out speed but still you could get more out of a supercharged v8 and it would probably be cheaper..

Back in the early 80's I had a Mazda GLC that I swapped a normally aspirated RX7 motor and tranny into. I wish I had known about ground effects and aero tuning back then as it started to get squirrelly at 120 MPH!!!
Up to 120 there was nothing that could touch it, not even Porsches!!!!

but, out side of huey aircraft engines, we need a high spin, torqy light power plant....

has any one ever heard of electric ?
i know the torque on them is huge and so is the spin, but we need some way of keeping them charged with out adding a gazillion lbs of batterys....

what if we had some free wheelling impellars on the planing surface to recharge the batts?.....any elec gurus here?

Heh... you'd have to violate a few laws of physics to get enough energy to charge the batteries that way.

Electric boats are limited by the same things electric cars are... no way to easily carry that kind of battery power around without a ton of weight, no way to recharge the batteries without an onboard nuclear reactor.

The torque of an electric motor would be nice, especially in a pair of azipods for maneuvering. I'd like to see those made for smaller boats, along with a generator/motor set up running diesel to provide power.

As much as we complain about the price, gasoline is a heck of a good fuel for boating... it's relatively light, packs a lot of power in a small space, and doesn't require hyper complicated engines to use.

Myself, I think biodiesel is the way to go for boats... it's too bad there aren't many diesel sterndrives around.

I've been keeping my eye out for desiel powered pleasure boats, and it appears to be increasing popular. Still an expensive initial purchase, and I'd imagine finding fuel on inland lakes to be somewhat arduous at times.

I know that Rinker offers the Vovlo D4 desiel in anything from ~24' and up. So the 246 I've had my eye on has that option. From what I've asked/read/heard on the rinkerboatowners website is that they tend to be slightly slower on the top end, however make a ton of torque (as you would expect), and come out of the hole really well. I'm seriously considering one in a few years when it's time to upgrade!

Doesn't matter what the combo is, you have to have horsepower and weight matters. When those numbers are the same, weight and horsepower, then they go the same speed . . . if not, then somebody is lying about their horsepower rating

P.S. To be hyper correct, this assumes that propshaft speed is the same and with the same propeller, orrrrrr, 100% equally efficient propellers regardless of shaft speed.
