Ok, I mean, I'm not running an optimax or race engine so i guess it's not that big of a deal. I don't mind the smoke but i'm just worried about carbon build up lol.

Re: Supertech TCW-3 oil

It is the cheapest so that is what I use unless something else goes on sale cheaper. Like gasoline, it is a commodity which is burned so I always buy the cheapest.

I have used it for years and it does just fine. Just because it is the Wal-Mart house brand and cheap does not mean it is poor quality. In fact, with Wal-Mart's buying power and clout, just the opposite may be true.

Indeed, if I remember correctly, there was a thread --oh, maybe a year ago--in which oils were compared. It turned out that Supertech has a better additive package than some branded oils (like Quicksilver). It wasn't the best, but it was far from the bottom of the pack.

For something that's being burned is just a commodity. I agree. If this were a 4 stroke or my car i would be putting full synthetic.

Any views on the best gear oil?

Re: Supertech TCW-3 oil

i do not know this oil specific , but in general the nowadays oil discussion is a basic kidding of the customers. walmart for sure does not produce own oil , also many quality brands do not produce on their own. so dozens of brands come from the same raffinery and are sold under different names, prizes and marketing strategies.

further - for very sure any tcw3 rated oil nowadays is much better than the best oil available when your engine was built , so go for it and enjoy boating !

All the TCW-III certified oils are listed on nmma web page. Supertech is made by Shell.

I have used it for years, w/o issue. I have tried a comparison to $40/gal full synthetic oil. It would be hard to say the full synthetic was better...I simply saw little difference. The full synthetic smelled a bit better.

I have been using full synthetic for about 10 years now.
It doesn't smoke as much, but the fumes seem to burn my eyes more.
And it doesn't smell right.

Will probably switch back to petrol based oil for my trolling motor, and Supertech fits the bill, and the wallet.

It looks like Warren makes Supertech Certification - TC-W3

I've used the Coastal, warren, and mag 1 tcw-3 oil before. It looks like Warren makes lots of off brands?

EDIT: I see there's a specific walmart super tech oil made by shell.

Re: Supertech TCW-3 oil

The Walmart by me carries OMC labeled oil as well and it isn't much more price wise so that's what I've been using in my JohnnyRudes. But then on average I'm only using about 18 gal of fuel a season as most of my water time is drift fishing.

Like others, I've used it exclusively for years -- in various Johnsons & Mercurys, never any problem whatsoever.
