Hello,
Is there a way to strenthen the transom/splash well without removing the motor? It is a 21 year old boat. I've seen pics on here where people have metal(Alu, stainless) supports lining the transom. Are these handmade jobs or something I buy?

Thanks,
Tom

Re: Support transom

Hello Sweeper..

Do you see signs of trans failure ?

Yes you can put a larger plate..but remember that the Energy from the drive unit will transfer to the trans..then the stringers/or hull..

So basically if you beef up here and there ..where no part ( or little ) of the energy is transfering to your hull is missplaced..then you didnt really do anything but build up a part that does nothing..

If you have a trans/deck system..and its failing on the deck side..then you have to look at that.

Putting more transplate for your motor may or not direct the thrust energy in places that the boats structure wasnt ment for.. If you know what I mean..

I still think your going to be ok no matter.. Unless you slap a 120 merc on there :) .

More info would be needed b4 you start modding your power :)

Re: Support transom

Almost bought a boat at an auction a few years ago that had a plate on the transom to mask a rotted core. HOWEVER, the bolts pulled through the other side due to the core being mush. I've seen other boats where the bolts got loose due to the core rotting and then the motor pulls them right through on accelleration. I once towed in a boat with a Chrysler 70hp hanging by the throttle and shift cables when the transom thumbscrews and bolts loosened up due to a rotted core...
