2 weeks ago just prior to pulling out and runnibng on fumes, my 50 rude started surge and jerk on me. I thought low gas, suckin in air. Last weekend after couple hours, same thing but w/ 3/4 tank left. Once out I investigated. Carbs redone, fule filter and pump replaced in 2002.
Only at 3/4+ throttle. Pulled the lid and noticed oil around the plugs and for gosh sakes they had become loose enough to turn by hand?!
Tightened back down. Know little about compression, etc... but I think this could be the culprit. Someone suggested lower unit but it didnt feel gear related as much as just loss power/pressure ??

Did it run good after you tightened the plugs up? If so, you probably found your problem.

Fuel starvation, maybe or, perhaps shift dogs in the lower unit will do the random "jerk".

not yet put her back in, just saw the loose plugs yday. I would think lower gear prob would be more of a clank that you would feel through the steering. This is more like a loss of power, as if you were abruptly de-throttling. plus I would think lower gear issue would be quick and permanent leaving you needing a tow. This motor is pretty clean and has the lower gear unit changed annually and its always clean. Is there anyway to tell the difference between a loss of power surge from a gear slip?

Yep - gears do not slip - they are engaged or not.
