Re: Surprise! 1973 Starcraft SS Owner

I heard that Losdinspace bought chuckndisc's 1973 Starcraft SS
I wonder if you're getting the LoneStar....

Did sell my 16SS to Losd... decided to go bigger, 18ft or so, before I commit to a long rebuild. Figured Id do it right, sell the 16ft green monster to another iboats member I knew was looking for one and just get my money back out. No loss for me and hopefully :D a gain for him! He says I get to ride in it someday, we'll get the families in it together or somethin'

The lonestar was a long shot, boat with a lot of work done to it already at a price I could swing (talked him down quite a bit from listed)... Problem is, its got a closed bow, I would prefer an open, and its a bit heavier - although this is a minor issue really.

I have my eye really on the 18ft SC in Blaine MN with 90HP Johnson on it with bad compression in one of the cylinders. 110 (or so) in three and 65 in other. Seller states he had it into mechanic and mechanic said very unlikely its gaskets or rings, rather a cylinder bore and refit, 800 - 1200 bucks. Seller says it needs to idle for about 15 minutes before you go otherwise it dies. After 15 minutes it will get up to WOT BUT takes long to hit the hole, real long, long enough to frustrate a skiier. Seller also says it works good at high rpms, but low end is rough Makes me think it would almost need work asap. The motor does start everytime and will idle.

I know the value is there at $650.00, just cant get myself to pull the trigger.

Just looking for a good one.... It will come along (maybe the Blaine one above... Ahh, I keep going back to that one! ;))

Dude, I paid $1000 for pretty much that deal there......and was thrilled with the deal. I didn't get seats, stereo, new steering or that nice kicker bracket. Buy it. (just make sure the trailer doesn't have any structural rust)

Re: Surprise! 1973 Starcraft SS Owner

That is a good deal, I would be interested if I was in the market for one:)

The motor sounds like it needs to be parted out so you can buy one that doesn't have bad compression though. That cylinder being 65 is no good at all.

Probably about what my Merc will show once I get brave enough to test it.

Nice looking rig, and it does come with some extras that make it a good deal. I wonder what kind of shape the deck/transom are in?

Good luck!

Re: Surprise! 1973 Starcraft SS Owner

Thanks for all the comments and advice... I loaded up my decision making team ( my 4 year old son) and we took a drive tonight. Ended up bringing the 18.5 foot SS ( I think ) home with us. Neither I nor my tough as nails son could say no!

I now think we have our family boat for the long haul... Planning on taking it out Wednesday! Will post pics tomorrow but I can already tell this one has been a fishing haven for the previous owners :)

Good deal, you have to make the little guy happy. I was worried about taking a little kids boat.

Good decision team:D Welcome to the armada.

My two boys love our SS, I'd be in deep trouble if I sold her:)

Good luck with the new rig, and post up some photos when you can!

Bumpin and Groovin'! My son LOVES the radio, its ALWAYS on when were working on it, boating in it, or anywhere near the boat!

The control center...mine for now but my son is already eyeing it up!:D

A shot of the deck and seat structure still below the deck. Ill be pulling out the deck or maybe cutting out the walk section, my kids want seats

Radio and Fish Finder battery. That two batteries on board, nice to know that while were listening to the tunes the boat will still start!

and more to come....

Re: Surprise! 1973 Starcraft SS Owner

Trailer has some rust and rollers have been nice for launch and landing!

Soft horizontal fish holders, very nice....now my Wally world specials will be overly protected!

We had come up with a name for the boat and then took her out for the maiden voyage on the good ole' Mississippi. We (the team - my 4 year old and I) decided on "River Rat"....as we are launching the boat another boat backs down the other side of the launch dock, I look over at the boat and guess what I see next to the outboard, yep...thats right, "River Rat". On to the next!

Now there you go Chuck. Taking pics ain't so hard is it? Great looking boat & co-co-cap'n.:D A few character scars on her but that gives you something to do this winter. What kind of fish do you try to terrorize?

Nice boat Chuck. For your bow area...I'm going to be fabbing up something like this removable bow deck section (new Starcraft) for mine which gives you seating when you need it and a nice casting deck also
