Re: SURVEY: BEST TCWIII OB MOTOR OIL?

For your motor, I'd suggest Mercury's Premium Plus. I tend to prefer whatever the motor manufacturer sells. They put in the additive package they find runs best in their product. They don't sell borderline lubricants or they'd be facing lots of warranty failures they'd have to cover. As a rule, their lubricants exceed the need.

Do we have to do this AGAIN??

Carlos, do a search on outboard oils, TCW-3, etc.

You will find more opinions than you can digest, along with a lot of good, and some bogus, information to support any answer you want. :D

Moving this to general Outboard.

As much as I like to discuss oils, I have to agree with JB. But if I must, Use Synthetic.

I recccomend a "good quality", ashless, TCW-3. I'ts my opinion that Pennziol Synthetic Blend @ $9 a gallon at Wal-Mart is the best bang for the buck.

And to help "shake it up" for JB so this this isn't a re-run. :) Mercury doesn't make any oil, they don't have a refinery, or a blending lab. And lest one postulte it's private labeled to thier "rigid specs", they don't seem to even have a petrolium engeneer. I know a guy who tried and tried to talk to someone technical about oil, they couldn't produce anyone. Thier "oil experts" seem to work in the marketing dept.

Sorry to shoot the Easter bunny. :D

-W

Re: SURVEY: BEST TCWIII OB MOTOR OIL?

You have a Merc so use Merc oil. They put their name on the label so it probably meets the engineering specs. :D

To my knowledge none of the motor manufacturers have an oil refinery or make their own oil. Why is that you say? Because the oil companies know how to do it better, faster and cheaper. :D

Citgo makes Mercury oil. I have never seen any proof that it is worth the extra $$$, other than the fact it has a nicer bottle. :) I'm happy with $6/gallon penzoil, I would love to find some cheap synthetic blend but there is no walmart around here...

Re: SURVEY: BEST TCWIII OB MOTOR OIL?

Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that the TCW-III standard expressly requires the use of ashless detergents.

And also... One second while I get the asbestos suit on...

And also, I presume that this is precisely the reason several 'super oils' do not have a TCW-III rating. That they use low ash (but not no ash) detergents for better high tempurature performance.

Just to let you know, I know very little about oils, and I could be completly out to lunch on this one.

(Now, it's duck, then cover? Right?)

Save the asbestos undies for another time. :)

I don't know enough about oils to dispute anything you wrote, such as TCW-3 being low-ash or no-ash by definition.

Perhaps saying "ashless TCW-3" is being somewhat redundant. But until I'm sure, I'm gonna say it that way to be sure the point is made.

-W

So Clams (prepare to cringe in horror), I used the Wallyworld Supertech oil in my 1250 last season, and was thinking about running some of the Merc juice through it from now on. Since you have forgotten more about old inline Mercs than most people know, what would you recommend for my 69 Merc 1250? It ran great on the Wally juice, very little smoke, plugs never fouled, but I want to make sure.

I think I can be safe in saying that, "The more you pay, the less ash you will have"! This may not :allways" be true, but pretty much. Use a full synthetic, and your oil worries will be behind you. Why skimp on the very thing that protects your engine?? I can be very much more specific, but I think I would be kicked off the board, Im usually on thin ice anyway.

Oil - shmoil, black gold is black gold, compare labels and ingredients. They are all the same... Although synthetic might offer some better protection under more rigorous conditions...

Re: SURVEY: BEST TCWIII OB MOTOR OIL?

Jason, For the old inlines I use, and reccomend the Pennzoil Synthetic blend found at Wal-Mart for $9 a gallon. I mix it at between 40 and 50 to one without being real anal about the mix. But I hammer my inline a lot, 50/1 is fine for "normal" use. A can of power tune as directed once a season takes it from there.

I'm not saying a full synthetic isn't "better", I'm talking "bang for the buck". With all the oil I've burned just the past 2 seasons, I could literally build up another powerhead for the price difference between Amsoil full synthetic and the Pennzoil blend. :D

-W

Carlos, if you must go WOT, then, you must go with SYNTHETIC, whole lot less chance of seizing up a motor. More bang for the buck.

Stang82, do you consider "trolling" a rigorous condition??? If not, you should.....Idle is when excess oil flows into certain places that eventually end up becoming high deposite-prone areas....You wanna seriously clean up your engine oil burn...go synthetic, period.
I've purposely tested about 7 different oil brands, and I've most definately come to some obvious conclusions. To keep it fair to all concerned, I will not mention brand-names, but I will tell you synthetic is usefull in more areas than just WOT....Idle is where it really shines, as no fouled plugs, and lack of smoke and startability really catch your attention first.
Those of us that prefer to keep our engines spotless outside as well, notice less residual to clean up...
Call it as you see it, but if you haven't tried it, you should consider it..

Re: SURVEY: BEST TCWIII OB MOTOR OIL?

Walleyehed is right on the money!

Oil is just oil, OMG! They are all the same, You have to be kidding! Sure, if you want to buy decarb by the case and a couple sets of sparkplugs every year. Figure those into your price for the cheep stuff and see where you come out! The cheep stuff dosnt protect in the off season as well either. The only thing you can say about a dino oil that is better than a synthetic is initial price. Synthetic beats dino in EVERY catagory, End of story.
