Re: SURVEY: BEST TCWIII OB MOTOR OIL?

hello
well I run wally world supertech in my 120 1985 with vro evinrude. if I am on the water I have 2 throttle setting. 5100 or 650 rpm.
I have run this motor since I put a piston in it in 1995 its never been decarbed sometimes I toss in a bit or ring free its had a hard life but loves it. two strokes like rpm. the biggest thing is to meticulously maintain the cooling system. if you must run hard you must replace the water pump complete kit and t-stats and thermostats yearly.
that is the key to rpms. the oil will lube at 9200 we did it at 25 to one for years on a modified 75hp jonny rude. they key is keeping everything cool. at the ragged edge there is no room for error. a non noticable problem at 4200 will be a piston burner at 5800.
use a good quality lube from your area. I saw the pdvsa oil last summer in rio chico and it does not look or smell like our oil but its powered my fiancees 135 merc since 1987.
good luck and keep posting

Re: SURVEY: BEST TCWIII OB MOTOR OIL?

THANKS TO EVERYBODY,

MY QUESTION IS BECAUSE I´D FOUND IN OUR MARKET MANY DIFFERENTS BRANDS OF OIL AND AFTER A TEST WITH THE PEOPLE OF MOTORKOTE 100 OF 6 BRANDS OF OIL (FRICTION TEST) THE RESULTS WAS: ALL OF OIL TEST RESULTS WERE DIFFERENTS!!! MY PREFER CHOICE IS CASTROL OUTBOARD PLUS...AS WELL AS MERCURY ORIGINAL OIL. IN FACT THE COLOR IS DIFFERENT AS OTHER: YELLOW COLOR OIL, GOOD PROPERTIES FOR ANTIFRICTION TEST...OTHER OB MOTOR OIL HAD DARK GREEN OR DARK BLUE COLOR OIL...TEST RESULTS WERE LOWER THATN CASTROL ALSO, MOTORKOTE100 IMPROVED 150% METAL FRICTION REDUCTION...GOOD TO CONSIDER...
THANKS AGAIN!

CARLOS

Gee, and all this time I thought the green or blue oils were better lubricants....

Re: SURVEY: BEST TCWIII OB MOTOR OIL?

SHAZAM: Ok, now that I have the flames put out. I really wasnt quoting anyone, its just what I hear all the time. I suppose you go to any store and ask for the cheepest SJ or whatever oil for your car. Well its the same thing with outboard oil. TCW-3 is just a minimum requirement and will work OK in most instances. But there are oils that exceed these rquirements and I personnally feel that as hard as my outboard works, that it deserves the extra protection and do not think the cost prohibitive. I like the way it sounds and the lack of excesive smoke, knowone is twisting your arm, and if you do not want to use it, then dont. I still feel if you tried it you wouldnt go back!

Its interesting to see people get so defensive about the oil they use, Its as if someone tells them that there are better products than the ones they use that it is a slam on there inteligence! Ive never seen anyone that suggests that synthetics are better to even isinuate that if you do not agree with them that you are somehow "JUST PLAIN STUPID"? We only suggest that they are better all around.

:D

For guys like me, chosing oil isn't ALL about friction reduction, smokeless running and claims of longer engine life. So...where can I find info that shows synthetic clings better and lasts as long as pet oil during the "off season"? I believe Practical Sailor (unbiased tech org.) did empiricle testing with oils and found pet oil lasted longer than synthetic on parts dipped and exposed to the elements.

An OMC warranty rep also told me synthetic left a film (too thin) which wasn't long lasting and corrosion was more prevelant in engines using synthetic that sat for only a month or two between use. That was based on warranty history. To avoid another flame war I won't post(again)what he said about the cost effectiveness of synthetics for the average boater. But it mirrors what Clam says, synthetic oil isn't cost effective when crunching numbers for the whole picture.

Engine hrs? 2000+ engine hrs are had with any TCW-III pet oil under commercial use. Many guys get 3000+ hrs. Ask around and see how many home folks really use their recreational motor 2000 hrs to the point of being able to take advantage of longer life from better lube. The answer is NOT many. Ask you own OB expert how many motors die from wear. Same answer. Run synthetic in an OB for other reasons.

I'm with the other guys on plug changes. No way and no how do I ever change plugs more than once a year with pet oil. They go 100s of hours without a problem. I've had more plug problems with my 50hp 4 stroke (it eats oem NGKs and doesn't eat the matching Champions). It's either motor problems, mixture or wrong plugs if they are getting fouled often.

One last thing. The comparsion of of TWC-III oil as the cheapest mininum is flawed. Oils that don't have the TCW-III certification are the cheap ones in my book (disclaimer: unless the motor mfg specs a non TCW cert oil). Try getting warranty work done when the mfg written specs say to use TCW-III certified oil and you are using something else. Motor books don't spec to use oils that only "claim" to meet or exceed TCW certs. Like I posted already, oil is about more than reducing friction.

Peace On Earth! :D

Hi All.I'm really enjoying this topic.Personally I'll still use the engime manufacturers lube.
But we ALL should use that TV ad oil, where you can have the motor running, drain the oil,and spray everything with water. And it keeps on running.
DHP

Re: SURVEY: BEST TCWIII OB MOTOR OIL?

Better take a look at most all of Johnson/Evinrude oils (NEW, and ALL synthetic based by the way)....NO TC-W3 on their TOP oils.......why??? because they exceed the requirements by so far, it's not even an issue..

In that case it's time for a TCW-4 standard.

-W

Re: SURVEY: BEST TCWIII OB MOTOR OIL?

I know about the J&E oil. Their name is on the label and that strongly imples an exception to the certification specs for their engines. That's good enough for me. It isn't the same as an independent oil mfg making claims and giving glossy advertising as the supporting data.

Re: SURVEY: BEST TCWIII OB MOTOR OIL?

Amsoil for me....

but then again, I also run Amsoil in my tranny, transfer case, front and rear diffs, etc on my truck!

Granted my motor doesn't use a ton of fuel.....heck, 12 gallons can typically last me all weekend, so I'm only talking about $5 vs $3 or so for the mercury equivalent.

My plugs never foul, I never see smoke. I just ran the sea foam through my motor a couple of weeks ago according to the instructions on this site.....I never saw all of the smoke that was to be the carbon burning off....I idle my engine a lot and troll with it (run jugs for catfish, plus I have a good way to go through a no wake zone from my lot to the lake).

My motor is a 1986 Merc 35 so I was expecting carbon, smoke, etc....but none here so I have to say Amsoil does what is says it does.

Oh boy...the troops are rallying. I run Bel-Ray and Golden Spectro in my Craftsman chain saws (15 yrs) Echo weedeaters (15 yrs) and to the gas of my Briggs mower 4 stroke engine (7 yrs). Let us know how the experiments go after 3000 hrs on your outboards, ok? :D

Got milk? :D

Re: SURVEY: BEST TCWIII OB MOTOR OIL?

Thanks Lube.......Not a problem recommending Amsoil.....The product speaks for itself.

I'm very sold on Amsoil BTW.....

With Ford Powerstrokes, a lot of people are having tranny replacements. I can tell you that I now have 114,000 on my tranny and it it still like new. I tow a lot and have a LOT of modifications to my truck that should kill a tranny. I believe that the AMSOIL is what has kept in like it is.

I can tell from running it in my Merc, that I never have fouled plugs, never smokes and as far as I can tell, not built up with carbon.

Lubedude, thanks for the compliment on the family and dog!

So, full synthetics all the way and Amsoil is the way to go.

Re: SURVEY: BEST TCWIII OB MOTOR OIL?

I truly believe that if BillP was stranded on a deserted Island with 100 gals. of gas and no JE oil, but had a case of Amsoil 100:1 that he would squeeze the oil out of a coconut and mix it with the gas before he would use a drop of the Amsoil. :D :D :D

Re: SURVEY: BEST TCWIII OB MOTOR OIL?

That's funny lubedude. You take it too personally. Yes, I do have issues with misleading advertising but would use even Amsoil if stranded without real oil.

:D

Maybe I wasn't clear in earlier posts: Amsoil, Samsoil...if it doesn't have the "official" certification specified in the operators handbook I don't use it. That doesn't mean it won't work (hexx, we got long hours with ob engines back in the 50s when straight 30w auto oil was specified). I presume that's the era you post about for many plug changes with pet oil.
:D

Anyway, I was running 100% synthetic in a Johnson 50 ob and mcys (Kawasaki 900, Yamaha 650, Suzukis 125, 175, 750 & 1100) starting back about 1976. I used synthetic in a 38hp 2s Kawasaki powered ultralight plane. My quick count overall is about 14 engines using synthetic. I've consumed cases of the stuff in the past 25 yrs in 2 and 4 stroke engines. I fell of the turnip truck a long time ago. It beats glossy advertising.
:D

Also, I started using synthetic and pet oil in the GAS of 4 strokes back in the mid 80s when the Snapper mower company gave double warranty if you added it in their 4 stroke engine gas (not crankcase). I was blowing engines every couple of years due to high angles of mowing slopes starving oil pickup. That problem stopped 10 yrs ago when I started adding 150:1 synthetic to the gas. I graduated from watermelon school for this one.
:D

:D

Honestly Im not nearly as Anal about it as you might think, Believe me I know you didnt just fall off the watermelon truck, just a little difficult to get the full scope of where you are coming from sometimes. No need to try and explain yourself again, its probably me thats not getting it. :D

I've run Amsoil in my 40 Merc 2 stroke since I got it(almost), neighbor gave me a case for free! I noticed almost NO smoking, easy starts and better top end speed(3 knots). If you can afford it get synthetic, also winterizes great, here in CA. I don't ever winterize(store in garage). Heinz
