is to pay for it :) We'll wrap up the deal in the next couple of days.

1997 Four Winns 278 Vista. Twin V-P 4.3's with FI and SX drives. 27' LOA, 9.5' beam. $15K take it or leave it based on sea trial and survey. That's what I offered 2 months ago and the owner finally bit last week. Sea trialed last week and that went very, very well.

Three hours yesterday afternoon with my friend (former surveyor) and the surveyor I hired (same guy who did the pre-purchase on my C*C). $150 to the marina for the short haul and $300 for the survey (special rate for me 'cause I know the guy socially)

Trouble spots:

- Needs manifolds and risers on both motors (I knew that when I made my offer... but that'll hurt)

- Portside Nav light is out
- One 110V outlet in the cabin is dead
- Tilt steering wheel (up/down) lock is broken
- Needs a heavier anchor
- Air conditioning. Sea water pump works, heat works, everything runs... but no cold air. The owner seemed genuinely surprised at that and spent awhile playing with it. It was bugging him because it worked earlier in the season. I decided it wasn't a deal breaker.
- GPS not working. Powers up, but can't get past the 'acceptance' screen.

Tap tests everywhere were fine, moisture meter showed a slightly elevated reading on the transom, to the right of the starboard drive, but according to both guys not a cause for concern. Everything else is dry.

V-P scan tool on the motors showed both operating within spec, and confirmed 358 hours on the port motor, 353 starboard. A few good surprises. Circulating pumps are recent, as are the petcocks for the seawater intakes (A/C and flush toilet). Batteries are all new this year. Everything else works, including the stereo and free-fall anchor windlass (that'll make the Admiral really happy!).

The boat has some cosmetic issues... the instrument panels are badly faded/discolored (I can spray those sometime), rubber insert in the rub rail could use replacement, and the boat is pretty dirty. Powder coat on the swim ladder is peeling. Cockpit upholstery and stitching are all in good shape, as is everything in the cabin.

All in all, a decent buy IMO. Anybody looking for a really nice Chris*Craft?

Congrats as well. That sounds like a great boat for the price. Get some pics up when you get her. You plan on getting it in the water this season or you going to winterize it right away?

Unfortunately, she'll be winterized almost immediately, shrink wrapped and blocked for the winter. That's the trade-off, I guess. Better price on the boat, but no chance to use it before paying for the winter layup.

Ah, well. It'll give me some downtime to get estimates for the needed work, and organize my 'hit list' for the spring.

In the meantime, I hauled the Chris out of the water this past Sunday, and that's sitting on the trailer in my driveway. That one I winterize and cover myself, so I have a busy few weeks ahead of me.

Thanks! I've developed a couple of simple rules over the last few years that have worked well for me in buying the Chris*Craft, a condo in Florida, and now the Four Winns.

1. Be flexible in my 'wants'. I'm buying used- I decide on size range (27-30' in this case), what accommodations and what kind of power I'm looking for. I don't obsess about brand. I worry about condition. Frankly, I'd rather have bought a single big-block (less maintenance cost), but the twin v-6's are a reasonable alternative.

2. Decide what the item is worth to me, and make my offer on that basis. I really don't care that 'Yachtworld' has the same boat(s) listed in the high 20's. Those are listings, and those boats are still sittin'.

3. Once I've made my offer, that's it. If the owner doesn't accept I keep shopping. There's always another one out there. If all he's looking for is a few more bucks to make him feel better about the sale I'm okay with that. Otherwise my offer stands.

I had a 28' Larson on my 'short list' at the time he called, so I went with his. Honestly, I'd have been happy with either boat at the right price.

Sounds like a winner to me...the redundancy of having two V6's would make me feel very good about taking her on some excursions off the beaten path too.:D

Good luck...and post some photos before she gets hibernates:cool:

They are nice small cruisers. I sold mine 2 months ago for 16100 with tri axle trailer. It was a 1994 with the 5.0l omc/volvo FI engines with SX drives. All maintenence was up to date freshwater boat from Michigan. It had brand new custom interior and new exterior seating. I put in new 8k btu a/c the year before. I got the boat for a deal and with the economy sold for a deal. The boat would do 48 w/o on gps.

Duh- I just took a good look at your pics. Yep, that's her. Mine doesn't have the radar arch, and the front lights are oblong portholes instead of the rectangular windows you have. Otherwise it's the same series (1994-1999 I think), same boat.

Looks like I could respray my dash facias in charcoal- the color looks good on yours. Thanks!
