Hi guys. Got an other issue. Yesterday while cleaning the lower drive unit found a suspicious piece of rubber (flat gasket type 1" dia) blocking the water flow. Wonder what it could be. My research shows its a broken piece from exhaust seal assembly.
Take a look found the rubber piece from under this lower unit component..
Look piece 82 in lower unit which I opened to cleaning

and found a piece of rubber blocking one of the passages which had a part number on it 984467. Invetigations shows its this in exhaust and cooling system.

Part 32 in exhaust and cooling system

Cooling water existed from under part 82 due to the blockage. Where does the cooling water normally suppose to exit the system from.

What do u suggest shall i do. What does the part do is it urgent to put in back on. Boat runs fine.
Please advise.

_____________________________
88 Bayliner OMC Cobra 5.7L

Yep, that's what happens when the exhaust shutters break off. They fall and block the exhaust passage.
They are there to slow down water sloshing up into the engine from waves when the engine is not running.

(Don S beat me with the reply)

Looks like you blew an exhaust "flapper" or "shutter" out through the exhaut tube and into the drive. These pieces sometimes can be more trouble than they are worth.

Do a search for exhaust flapper or shutter on this forum and you will find may threads discussing how they fail and whether or not to replace them. Volvo Penta even put out a bulletin a few years back to remove or not replace them in the event of a part failure.

They were designed to help prevent water from backing up into your exhaust ports on your engine when "following" waves or wakes contact your boat (coming off plane rapidly and having the wake splash up high on the transom).

I would replace them.

Do a followup search on "water intrusion" and you'll find a few posts where water got into the engine via wave or wake. Water seeks it's own level.

sorry for the semi thread-hijack, but how come stringer type drives don't need flappers?

We have them.... they are in the bellhousing. They are two flaps, one on each side for the V engines.Look HERE Part #42.
