suzuki 200 *87) static timing

how is it set, please? manual says it needs to be 22 deg, but how is it set?

Jay,<br /><br />Are you still having problems with the one motor running 600 rpm or so less than the other? Have you tried switching the TPS from the good motor to the bad one to see if it fixes the problem? I would also check the wiring for the TPS too and make sure it hasn't been disconnected anywhere. I really think you are having the same problem I did since it's something that started suddenly..<br /><br />-Rob

jay<br /> without me resorting to the manual I need to know is the stator movable or fixed. in otherwords does your 87 have a link that moves the stator with the throttle or does it have a switch on the port side of one of the carbs,

rodbolt - stator is fixed as i recall. <br /><br />there is a multiple position selector switch on the side electronics box. this selector is supposed to change something in the timing but not the overall. <br /><br />my curiosity relates to the fact that in order to achieve the same idle rpm, my two motors require different switch settings!<br /><br />r_anderson - yes its associated. different slant. while i haven't done exactly as you suggest(swapping) i have replaced with a different switch with no change. i do find setting the switch quite a pain and could contribute to the problem.<br /><br />my understanding about the switches (the tps and selector switch) affect slow speed (rpm)operation and not top (rpm)speed. maybe this is over simplification, but IF there is no adjustment in the system, why do they specify a total lead of 22*?<br /><br />just trying to learn and understand.........as there are no suzuki techs within a days tow!<br /><br />any actual testing will haave to wait till next season, need to collect data for next season<br />thanks for any help!

hello<br /> the switch on the side alters idle timming and thus idle speed. the WOT timing is controlled by the tps on the port side of the carb, not much you can do with wot timing other than check it. you must use a dyno,test wheel or lake test methods.<br />if the switch fails on the side you can use a fixed resistor( i have the specs someplace) in place of a movable switch.

No, the TPS definately affect WOT timing as well. I actually think it has no effect on idle timing. When mine was disconnected the motor ran perfectly at idle, but it was about 500 rpm slower than the other motor at the same throttle setting and was also 500 rpm slower at WOT. So the TPS being disconnected definately hurt WOT performance.<br /><br />-Rob

anyone know where i can find/buy the harness side connector that mates with the tps switch?<br /><br />it would make it easier to set the switch if I can get the connector and crimp on a couple female bullet connectors to probe with the multitester. <br /><br />my current probes don't easily fit.

jay<br /> you can order it from a suzuki dealer. its a small test harness that plugs in so you can monitor and set the TPS.<br /> why do you suspect a TPS problem?

its been difficult to set, honestly, can't say for sure if its set "right" right now. trying to set it, it (the reading) bounces all over the lot, compounded with the inability to get good consistent readings. i need a better way to maintain contact with the leads while tightening the mounting screws.<br /><br />i'll call a suzuki dealer to order the test fitting/connector.<br /><br />thanks for the help.
