Suzuki 8hp gearbox with powerdrill

Hi
Ive a suzuki DT 8hp serial 0801 737... ive just gotten hold of that runs but isnt pumping water. The impeller didnt look too bad, but what do i know! ive put the gearbox in a barrel and used a 14.4v drill to turn it, with a cloth to help protect the shaft. The water just dribbled out the outlet on top of the waterpump.
Is this what i would expect from a waterpump turned by a drill or should it shoot out?

Hi I can add something more. If i run it without the window on the side of the leg for undoing the gear shift lever the water will pump pretty well. So its the exhaust pressure getting in somewhere or the pump not having the power to overcome the exhaust pressure at the exhaust outlet of the powerhead. I dont think its the head gasket as if i attached a hose to the inlet pipe and run it for a few minutes and then try and start the motor she starts fine.
Any ideas where to start on these? Exhaust gaskets?
