Suzuki DT150 - grinding noise when trying to shift into forward

Just recently, I have notice when trying to shift into forward I hear a grinding noise. It shifts into reverse no problem. When I hear the grinding noise, I would try to push the throttle a little more to try to get it into gear but it would just rev the engine. I would give that a try a couple of times and if it still fails I would throw it in reverse and then try to shift it back to forward and then it will work. I have noticed that it usually happens when I try to put it into gear for the first time after it has been off since the last trip or turned off while fishing. Once it is in gear it runs perfect and I can put it back into neutral and back in gear again no problem. Does anyone know what could be the issue? Thanks,

The innards of the control box are either worn or the cables are misadjusted. Put the box in neutral. Then go back to the engine and disconnect the SHIFT cable. Then make sure the engine shift lever is in its neutral detent. Now bring the cable end back up to its attachment point. DO NOT push or pull anything. If the cable end does not line exactly with its attachment point, cable adjustment is necessary. If it does line up exactly, there is an issue with the control box.

you can also leave the shift cable disconnected and try shifting "at the engine". For gosh sakes, have someone else in the boat at the helm when you do this. If it doesn't shift properly then there is an issue in the lower unit. Keep doing what you are doing however, and you can be guaranteed there will be a problem in the lower unit.

You don't mention whether your idle speed is in spec or not. A high idle can cause shifting problems in my experience.
