Suzuki dt4 broken shift rod

My shift rod broke in half on my 4 Hp Suzuki. I can't seem to figure out how to remove the upper portion of the shift linkage. Do I need to remove the power head to do this? Or are there any tricks? Thanks.

Just a thought, but depending on the location of the break, maybe you could make a "sleeve" from a section of pipe/tubing that's slightly larger diameter than the rod, slide it over the break and tack weld it both ends. If it's do-able, could save you time, trouble/money$$$
