Suzuki DT65 leak?

Hey, I have a Suzuki DT65 and I started it today before taking it out before weekend. I noticed (besides how rich it was running) that there was water coming out around the lower unit seal. I have a good stream from the "pee" hole and from the exhaust port. Is water coming around the seal abnormal? I figured a seal is supposed to be there for a reason and that it may be time for a new one. Basically I'd like to know if the deterioration of the seal and the leak is bad. If it's only there to protect the lower unit from the shaft housing then it's in good enough shape to do its job. Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Jake

Hi, the serial number is 06502 909232. Sorry for calling it a "pee" hole everyone, I didn't know it was called a "telltale."

You are refering to a lower unit seal. I am confused as to what you are refering to. If you are refering to the joint between the exhaust housing and the drive shaft bearing housing or between the drive shaft bearing housing and the lower unit, there are no seals except th 'o' ring seal that keeps the water out of the shift rod cavity and hence the lower unit. Water can leak past the mating surfaces because of distortion. If it is the mate between the lower and the bearing housing some sealant will take care of that. If it is between the Exhaust housing and the bearing housing then the whole lower unit has to be dismantled to remove the bearing housing and seal it. Try simply removing the bolts that secure the lower one at a time and cleaning them, coating with thread sealant and replacing them leaving the final tightening untill all the bolts have been done. This may straighten the housing plate and reseal all.

Sorry for the confusion, I'll try to clear it up a little. There is a large rubber ring around the outside of the gearcase between the gearcase and the driveshaft housing. I am not sure whether to call it a "seal" and "o-ring" or a rubber band. I don't know what it's function is. I am guessing it the gearcase from rubbing against the driveshaft housing. The leak I am getting is from around this seal/o-ring/rubber band. I just want to make sure it's ok for some water to exit from around the seal. If not it'll need to be replaced.

Go To www.brownspoint.com. click on Parts. click on DT65. Click on detail 1989. here you can look at the various assemblies to identify the seal that you are refering to. The only seal in that area is the exhaust tube seal if this is what you are refering to and it is leaking, it may allow exhaust water to run out of the joints.

James, thanks for the help. I think you are right about the exhaust seal. I'll have to go to the boat and check it out tomorrow to make sure. Is it hard for an extreme novice to take off the lower unit on this motor to replace this seal? I'd love to get my hands dirty but I don't want to ruin anything down there. It probably wouldn't hurt to change the oil in the lower if thats a simple task.

Thanks again,
Jake

No problem removing the lower unit on these motors. Look at the drawing for the clutch. The nut #3 has to be backed of untill the shaft can be pushed in far enough to release the shift rod.Put the motor in full up condition.Remove the lower unit bolts and pull the lower out carefully. No biggie.
