I had the carbs built last year and lower unit dope changed also. My truck went south and this is the first i've had the boat out. It's a 1989 model DT85. We launched and the motor worked fine in reverse. I moved the throttle to neutral...then forward and when I pressed the throttle forward...I got the sound like you get right before it engages...but it never fully engaged. I got a slight grind and the motor would rev up but not go anywhere. Before the carbs were built it would go into forward gear...it just fell on it's face due to trash in the carbs. Any suggestions?

Sounds like whoever did the carbs has altered the cable adjustment just inside the engine cover when they disconnected the linkages. Pop the cover off and disconnect the shift cable from the linkage and shift the linkage by hand and see if the problem goes away. You probably just need to adjust the cable length a little with to get it right.
