Hi Gents...

I'm meeting with the Suzuki technical trainer in 2 weeks. If anyone has any outboard "tech" questions regarding Suzuki, feel free to post them here, and I'll run them by him, on your behalf.... :)

Ahoy, Schematic!

Glad to see you. It's been a while.

I have a question about the cam nose oil pump drive on the DF60-70. I have read of a few failures of the pump drive, at least one because the cam nose sheared off.

Is there a fix or retrofit to prevent this or is it too rare to matter?

Thanks. :)

Re: Suzuki outboards.....

I've heard of a few cases of the cam breaking on the forum.. nothing from suzuki and I've been a Suzuki dealer for 21 years. I've sold around 40 DF60's & 70's since 1998 of which about 30 are commercial motors, the early ones are up into the 2500 to 3000 hour range. I've seen no major mechanical problems such as broken cams. It obviously has happened but it must be fairly rare from my experience.

Hi, Andrew.

Numbers are the same in Swedish. :)

The numbers you offer do not contain the model code, so I can't figure it out either.

Re: Suzuki outboards.....

Just bought a 85hp suzuki and the guy I got it from says it needed to be rebuilt cause the berrings were bad. Had to find out for myself started right up and runs just fine in the yard. But when I took it out to test it and shift into gear runs ok at slow speed but when i give it more throttle it doesn't go and eventually cuts off. If I tilt the motor where the intake is just in the water it will run pretty well seems that when it is under load it won't put out enough power. What could be causing this? Don't know much about motors and just want to get a few opinions before I take it into the shop. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Re: Suzuki outboards.....

The chart in Swedish (I apologise to the Germans) references a 1986 motor as "VG"
This motor has no letters on it of any description only numbers.

Hey schematic-

I'd really like to know how to get around or disable the rev limiter on a V6 suzuki.

jwdonald,

Your 85 is not running right, when down in the water, because of backpressure.

I'll bet it's not running on all three cylinders.

Hello Schematic, I am looking for guidance on when to change the thermostat on My 2001 df115. Also is there a failsafe thermostat available. Any info is greatly appreciated and I thank You for taking time to help.

I suggest changing thermostats every 3-4 years, depending on hours and salt water usage. What do you mean by a "failsafe" thermostat? The ECM has a failsafe mode if any sensor fails - is that what you mean?

Re: Suzuki outboards.....

lakensea, I use My df115 In salt water 100%. I flush engine every trip religiously for 15 min. A failsafe thermostat is a thermaostat which, if it sticks or fails, it stays open. Your engine runs cold but will not over heat. These thermostats are available for auto application. I have never had a themostat fail. I changed thermostats on my old O/B every 2yrs. Thanks for the info.

Re: Suzuki outboards.....

Dan, No such thing for outboards and it's a good thing. If a thermostat sticks closed (rare on an outboard), the engine will overheat and set the alarm off so you know something's wrong - get towed in, get it fixed and you're all set. If the t-stat sticks open (more common) the engine will run cold all the time and you won't know it (unless you have a temp gauge, so far unavailable from Suzuki). The result will be excesive carbon buildup, fuel contaminated oil, etc...

lakensea , actually failsafe themostats are a blessing, saving a motor from major damage, Costly repairs and getting towed in. You would have to run the motor a good long time with the themostat stuck open befor anything major went wrong. However You make a good point about having a temp guage. I have to work on that. Thanks for the input I appreciate it.

Re: Suzuki outboards.....

My 1989 Suzuki 140hp has a water alarm that sometimes stays on constantly after I start it. If I quickly turn the ignition off then back on it stops and all is fine. Is this something I should worry about? The previous owner had the same problem.
