Suzuki Parts Interchangeability?

I'm looking at a 1989 Suzuki 85hp with a blown powerhead to have for parts for my 1985 75hp Suzuki. I was even considering putting the powerhead from my 75 on this engine so I would have a running 85hp Suzuki for my boat. The powerheads are identical except for the carbs. I was just looking at the microfiche lookup on the Brownspoint website and it looks like the parts have different part numbers. I thought that the parts on 80's vintage DTs were interchangeable like the lower units, trim units, starters, etc. Does anyone know how interchangeable these years are? Or should I look for a 1985 parts engine?

I don't believe the parts are interchangeable. I have an '86 DT-85 and was looking at an '88 DT-85 for parts. There were many differences, enough so that I didn't buy it. I would think the differences would be even greater considering you are even talking different engine horsepowers as well as quite a difference in years.

Actually, the DT75 and DT85 are identicle in every way except for the carbs and exhaust tube I believe. You're probably right though and I would have to think that the 1989 engine could be interesting as a rebuild project but not parts. I can get a great deal on it and it has never been in salt water and looks brand new. I know in the past, I robbed a lot of parts off of a 1988 DT85 for the 1985 engine - starter, cowling seal, and controls. The gears I have in the lower unit are out of a 1982 DT85 that I got for free. I was broke when I put this this back together and hoped I would get 1 season out of it - that was 17 years ago and I am just now redoing the seals in the lower unit. This motor has been amazingly reliable but I just wish it was an 85hp.

Re: Suzuki Parts Interchangeability?

I think I have figured this out. For the 85hp Suzukis 1979 is it's own model. 1980 - 1982 are compatable. 1983 - 1985 are compatable. 1986 - 1987 are compatable. 1988 - 2000 are compatable with minor changes to fuel pumps etc. On a side note I have located a powerhead that has good compression but bad oil seals for a 1988 for only $50.00. Could be interesting to get the 85hp up and running - I was told the oil injection failed and 1 cylinder is scored. That is why I mix my oil and do not trust oil injection.

That almost sounds like the one I was looking at. What state is it in ?? It supposedly had bad crank seals and wouldn't idle. I need the trim unit but '88 is a different setup than my '86.

the powerhead with the bad seals is in Boston. He's only selling the crank and block assembly, not the whole motor though. I think the tilt and trim from an 86 or an 87 will work. I'll keep my eyes open for one.

Sounds like the same deal but my guy was selling the complete motor and it was an '88. Quite a coincidence, also Boston Craigslist.
