well, over the weekend, i encountered a new problem with one of my 200 hp suzuki's (1987's).

coming into the dock, one refused to engage reverse. moving the control lever ito reverse started the process, could hear (i presume) the tips of the gears grinding, but no engagement! this was at an idle speed rpm of 600 so it wasn't being abused and there was a dwell time where it was in neutral before attempting engagement?

thanks for listening and any help greatly appreciated.

Re: suzuki shifting problem

I had this same problem , but with forward. Rodbolt told me that there was worn parts in the clutch. I took it apart and everything looked new. The whole mechonism was very loose though. I tighened every thing up and now I lost the reverse and have forward. I think it is in the ajustment. Me and another guy on here have been tring to get info on this with out to much help. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Re: suzuki shifting problem

haven't tried it yet, but was hoping it was just a cable adjustment!

looking at the manual, i surmise the springs are quite important to the operation. i think i'm going to get a couple new ones (looks like loosing tension will affect performance)---and hope i can remove the shift mechanism without breaking any bolts!!!

Re: suzuki shifting problem

Its best to have a manual. There is 7 bolts holding the lower unit on. The clutch is in the front of the lower unit. Becareful with it. There are some small parts that you can lose easily when you take it apart. www.brownspoint.com has picture breakdowns and the guy there is helpful. He has all the parts you may need also. I don't know if what I'm doing is right, but it works. The shift housing assembly is what I've been adjusting. I took it apart the first time and nothing looked worn. I've worked on Mercs before, but this is a learning experiance for me. Nothing like the Mercs I've worked on.

Re: suzuki shifting problem

i have the luxury of a spare lower unit. just now completed removing the shift mechanism. my "spare" appears to be tight and will be swapped in the next time i'm at the boat and pull it from the water.

huskie - the small parts buckeye referred to are two from the bottom of the mechanism, the actual "shifter" (an angular, "L" shaped piece and its pivot pin.

Re: suzuki shifting problem

Disconnect the shift cable from the engine and shift the engine with your hand on the engine linkage. If it works OK the problem is in the cable or its adjustment. If you still have a problem its likely in the gearcase.
