I am in the course of buying a Suzuki DT 100, V4. Are this good motors? It has 10,5 bar compression on all 4 cylinders, was built in 1995. How high is the compression normally in new motors and how fast does the compression normally decrease in average use per year? What is the advantage of a V-shape compared to the cylinders in-line?
Are the suzukis comparable with yamahas in quality?
Many questions, please help a poor unknowing german.

not knowing the conversion fro Bar to PSI and back, what your looking for is a 10 PSI or less spread between the cylinders.
2 stroke motors typically dont lose compression all the way up until a piston burns.
most 2 strokes use a keystone or semi keystone type compression rings.
the advantage of a V over an inline is engine size.
suzuki makes a good product, by 95 most the corrosion issues had been addressed. my only complaint with a suzuki was corrosion.

Re: Suzuki V4 DT100, corrosion problems

Thanks very much for your answers, I?ve looked at the motor. It looks good, but I found small corrosion-bubbles under the paint around all 4 head gaskets and at the bracket where the motor was mounted on the boot. Is this a reason not to buy the motor, or could this be solved with a little paint work. As I said it was not verx much. But compared to this my 1997 Honda 40 Hp looks like new. There is not one bubble under the paint. When you see the corrosion around the head gaskets doese this mean, that the cooling system is totally corroded inside. What was the specific suzuki corrosion problem? Bad paint? Bad aluminium-alloys? Are there other brands with corrosion problems?
Experts please help.

all motors corrode in saltwater
its just a fact of life
starting about 94 or so suzuki started chrome plating the bolts, helped a lot.

Converstion stuff:

1 bar = 14.5038 psi (which is close to atmospheric presssure)

10.5 bar = 152.3 psi

10 psi difference between cylinders is about .7 bar difference between cylinders.

Re: Suzuki V4 DT100, 1995 good motor? compression 10,5 bar

I bought the motor today. the testrun was good and it had exactly 10.0 bar at all 4 cylinders, all in all it looks very nice but I want to paint the shaft. Do I need special Suzuki paint, or could I use any car paint? And if so, where can I get the suzuki paint "antrazit".
Thanks for the answers

No idea about where to get that paint, but yes you can use a good auto paint on outside but definitely use zinc chromate primer on any aluminum under water line! And yes suzuki are excellent engines if maintained.I would also check compression with another set of gauges, each cylinder being identical compression is great but 160 psi is a little much,if gauge is correct you will have to run aviation fuel to prevent detonation.

I think it was 145 PSI on all 4 cylinders, if 1 bar is 14,5 PSI like the others said in the forum.
Thanks very much for your reply. Are there any special things in the maintainance scedule which are especially important. I really don?t like to rely on mechanics if I can?t judge or see what they have done. Anyway thanks very much.

Use any outboard manufacturer's 2-stroke TC-W3 engine oil. Don't use aftermarket oils. Find yourself a quality technician.
