I have a 2001 mercury 60HP big foot 4 stroke. It runs fine but is a under powered for the boat I baught it that way the boat originally had 150 on it. It has started to burn oil and I am seeing a likely rebuild in the future. My question is this If i am going to put a new/rebuilt power head in it can I bump up the HP by simply getting a power head for a 90 or 115?
Now saying I was able to do that would I have to swap carbs and everything else?

Re: Swap for larger power head

I'm no pro., but i think that a 60hp power head is a 3 cylinder. you are talking about putting 90 or 115 on your midsection and lower unit right?? those are 4 cylinders and I'm sure that calls for a diff lower unit. it's no fact, but Ive done some parting in my day and that sounds like putting Chevy pistons in a Honda block. check it out a little closer, you might find out that you need the whole thing not just the power head. I checked a little deeper and the 115 is a 4 clyinder so no go. But the 90 is a 3 cly like the one I have. When I searched this prior to posting I saw several that have done similier swaps onjh other brands but couldn't find anyone that has done it on a Merc. I'm not trying to make me a Jonny Cash style outboard just looking for more power.
