Ntheyer
what ign system are you useing? points, EST or DDIS ? all wire differently. and instead of talking posts lets label them. you have the main lug which is about 8mm depending on which stater your usuing. the small 4mm post close to the block is called the S terminal and should ONLY have a yellow with red stripe wire and the other 4mm post away fron the block that should only have a purple(sometimes) or purple/ yellow is called the R terminal. on the wire on it. The orange wire,if used, goes to the positive main lug on the starter soloinoid. the 10Gage red from the 50 amp breaker goes to the same lug.
if you have any purple or purple yellow wires on the S terminal you will get smoke. but first we need to know what ign you have so you can make sure the shift inturrupt has been properly rewired. if not modified from the 1974 configuration it may roast the ign circuits if activated.

YEAH!!!! You'll never beleive all it was... the two wires were swapped at the starter solenoid. I had the yellow/red on the wrong pole. This is why so much current was flowing into the purple wire which was joined with the purple/yellow wire from the solenoid. It finally dawned on me once I had traced everything for the 10th time with the multimeter and had replaced everything in starting circuit (slave, solenoid and starter.) Well, in thre future we will all know what the symptoms are of a stupid, rookie thing like having the solenoid wires reversed. Glad I didn't create more damage (I hope). It cranks no problem now. Tomorrow I'll pull it out of the garage and work on starting it. I have to prime the fuel lines etc. Hopefully she'll start. I'm really sorry for wasting everyone's time with such a stupid mistake. I'll let everyone know what happens. Really, thank you all for your time and faxes even!

Nicholas

Re: Swap from 1974 Mercruiser 3.0 to 1995 HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

Gentlemen... I just got back from the lake and any day at the lake is better than in the garage fixing... These are my issues... The boat will not go full throttle. I would say that I can get about 3/4 throttle at most. I fooled with the choke, but never got it better than that. I also have black smoke on startup and I can only get the motor started with full throttle, and then only very rough and shaky for a few seconds, then it clears up and it will idle all day long at 1000 rpm. It is really behaving a lot differently than on the hose in the driveway. I could get the boat on plane by moving all weight forward and even then, only 3200 max, but this is from the engine, not prop. If I try for full throttle, it immediatley begins choking, bogging and in general, kicks up a fuss.

I am assuming the idle is far too rich and this is why the carb needs to be wide open to get it running, I will adjust that again. The wide open throttle concerns me because the choke plate is completely open. Is this because I have the 1974 manifold and carb on the new engine? Remember, the carb and manifold are for the 2.5 liter 120, and they are installed on a 3.0 liter 140. Are the main jets too small to allow the 3.0 liters to breathe?

Onemore question; how do you know when the choke is adjusted properly? How much tension should I dial in? This is the vaccum choke, not electric.

Thanks. It is surreal that the thing actually ran all day well, other than full throttle. we had a great time, all due to you telling me it could be done. Thanks.

It could be a lot of things. The timing could be off, plugs, wires, timing, dirty carb. You said the motor had sat a while so it is not uncommom for it to smoke at first. It prob would be best to do a tuneup, set the timing and go from there

I will do that. The smoking was everytime upon startup though, so it is too rich I think.. What do you think about the manifold and carb for 2.5 used on a 3.0?

I am not sure so I cant say. The more experienced here can answer that for you though. Its getting hard to keep track of all this. It might be better to start a new topic. lol

No,.. I don't think it's Because the Carb.,+ Manifold are from the old motor,....
If that in itself was the Issue,.. It SHOULD Be Lean,.. After All, It was Feeding a Smaller Motor......

But,... The Carb. Is the Problem,.... It's Either in Serious Need of Tuning,.. Or Possibly a Serious Cleaning,.. Or Rebuild.........

I Think you're looking for a Fuel Issue,... No Doubt.......

Bondo, I began a new thread on Carb Tuning. I ordered the carb kit from stem to stern and was looking for some input on 'Tuning' the carb. My biggest question was the choke. I would think that if the engine chokes and hesitates at full throttle, that it is lean. I may have to rejet I guess. By the way, thanks for following the project along and helping me. How can I post a picture with my post?
